Fire burns unoccupied home

GREENWOOD – Multiple fire and emergency agencies responded Thursday to a raging fire at an unoccupied home on Willard Road.

According to Greenwood Fire Coordinator Corey Grumelot, Coronaca, Lower Lake, Hodges-Cokesbury and Waterloo fire departments responded early in the afternoon to 1211 Willard Road because of the blaze.

Grumelot said the fire was fully involved and spread from the home to the nearby land. The fire coordinator said Greenwood County EMS took two firefighters to the hospital. Both had heat exhaustion and one, who is allergic to bee stings, was stung by bees while on the scene.

Grumelot said firefighters were eventually pulled back because of the extreme heat. S.C. Forestry responded and plowed a fire break around the fire to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby property.
