Storms Cause Damage in Columbia Area

COLUMBIA AREA — As a second day of rain and lightning rained down on the Midlands on Tuesday, fire fighters were kept busy responding to reports of flooding, downed power lines and fire alarms.  Some of the fire alarms were for the real thing: A home in the Dove Creek subdivision in The Summit suffered about $50,000 in damage after it was struck by lightning, interim Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said. New Issue: Name of Firetrucks

RICHLAND COUNTY — A new issue is on the table as Columbia and Richland County renegotiate countywide fire service: the name on the trucks.  Tuesday, Richland County Councilwoman Gwendolyn Davis Kennedy said she wants Richland County to get credit for its role in the joint service being renegotiated this year. Goose Creek Police Officer Shot in the Line of Duty Released from Hospital

GOOSE CREEK – Goose Creek Police Officer Robert Edwards, Jr. was released late this afternoon from an area hospital and is scheduled to return for additional surgery later in the week.   Officer Edwards, Jr. was shot during a domestic call in Goose Creek on July 19. (more…)

Horry County FF’s Respond to Three Weekend Blazes

Horry County firefighters responded to three fire during the weekend in Conway and Longs, according to Leslie Yancey, spokeswoman for Horry County Fire Rescue.

The first incident was reported at 11:55 a.m. Saturday at 315 Soho Court in Conway and involved a double-wide mobile home, Yancey said. Six Horry County fire units responded and Conway Fire Rescue also provided assistance. (more…)

County Hires Firm to Assess EMS Services and Fire Departments

A comprehensive report on Beaufort County’s emergency-medical and fire services should be completed by December, barring unforeseen events, according to the county’s director of public safety.

The County Council approved spending $225,963 Monday to hire CRA Inc. of Alexandria, Va., to study the county’s EMS system. (more…)

Fires Oust Families From Their Homes

Fire forced people from their homes in Summerville, Mount Pleasant and near Sangaree on Monday.

The Mount Pleasant fire happened at 1242 Haig Lane in the Charleston National Subdivision near Park West and displaced a couple. (more…)

Lake City City Council Discusses FF’s Funeral Leave

LAKE CITY — Lake City City Council has approved an updated personnel policy after a debate over the amount of funeral leave firefighters should receive compared with other city employees.

Under the revised policy, approved July 13, a Lake City firefighter will receive two shifts of funeral leave after an immediate relative’s death. The city’s firefighters work 24-hour shifts followed by 48 hours off. (more…)

Body of SC Man Found in Fire

PAMPLICO, SC (WMBF) – Police are investigating the cause of a fire that left one Pamplico one dead Sunday morning.

Twenty-five-year-old Raymond Scott Self was alone in his mobile home on East Main Street when it caught fire at 2:30am on Sunday. (more…)

Ladson Home Destroyed in Fire

LADSON, SC (WCSC) – A family of four in Berkeley County is without a home after a fire destroyed their house overnight Tuesday.

City of Florence Cracking Down on Fire Lane Violations

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Florence city fire inspectors issue nearly two dozen parking summons each month for fire lane violations.”

It can block our emergency vehicles in the event of a fire, or it can block ambulances in the event of a medical emergency,” said Fire Marshall Ken Carr, noting it also impedes people from evacuating a building in an emergent situation. (more…)

FF’s Still Battling Blaze

CONWAY – Due to increased fire activity on the Hardwick Rd. Fire in Horry Co., the South Carolina Forestry Commission will be stepping up its firefighting effort in the week ahead. Crews working the fire this weekend experienced one small break over and one large one of 30 acres. Persistently hot, dry weather has negated any benefits from prior rainfall on the area. As a result, fire behavior has been aggressive in the hotter, windier afternoon hours. (more…)

Holly Springs Fires Jeffcoat… again

HOLLY SPRINGS – Commissioners voted Friday to terminate long-serving Chief Lee Jeffcoat after weeks of heated debate. The commission voted 3-0 after board member Hugh Jackson walked out of the meeting, claiming he was not given 24 hours’ notice or an agenda as stated in the commission’s bylaws for special meetings. Bomb Found During Fire Call

GAFFNEY – A Gaffney man faces several charges after police found a homemade bomb and other incendiary devices after his apartment porch caught on fire Wednesday. The Gaffney Fire Department was called to Westwood Apartment Homes on West Buford Street and extinguished a fire on the porch. (more…)

FF’s Called to Cobb’s Glen

Woman Dies of Fire Injuries

UNION – Smoking in bed with an oxygen tank nearby proved to be a fatal combination for a Union woman. Betty Painter Boulware died Thursday, July 15, from injuries she received from a fire at her home nearly a week earlier. (more…)

Fire Damages Plantersville Home

PLANTERSVILLE – Quick response by Georgetown County firefighters is being credited for saving most of a burning mobile home. They were also able to save a kitten that was inside the home when the fire started. Firefighters had to battle the soaring heat and the flames at the home at 5005 Jackson Village Road that was reported at around 4 p.m. (more…)
