FF’s Wear Pink To Fight Breast Cancer

CHARLESTON — For the next three duty days, firefighters with the Charleston Fire Department will wear pink shirts with their uniforms. The gesture is meant to raise awareness of breast cancer and support those dealing with the disease.

Charleston firefighter T.J. Brennan started a non-profit to help uninsured and under-insured women in the Charleston area get tested and treated for the disease. Lowcountry Hope has also gotten other area departments to sign on and wear pink during October as well. (more…)

Propane Leak Prompts Evacuation

HILTON HEAD — Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division crews evacuated the area around Baynard Peninsula in Sea Pines on Tuesday after a propane tank being removed by a contractor began to leak, according to a division spokeswoman.

Crews arrived at 7 Baynard Peninsula at about 12:15 p.m. and evacuated the area until the pressure subsided and the tank could be plugged to stop the leak, Fire Marshal Joheida Fister said. (more…)

Mobile Home Destroyed By Fire

LADSON — A house fire near the intersection of Highway 78 and College Park Road in Ladson caused some traffic issues Thursday morning.

Firefighters were able to put out the mobile home fire in the 600 block of Dutch Fork Lane.

The fire occurred around 6:30 a.m. and no one was hurt. (more…)

Fair Highlights Trucks and Fire Safety

SUMMERVILLE — This year’s Lowe’s Safety Fair fire truck parade will take a different route. About 80 trucks will start at Summerville Medical Center in Oakbrook at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4, travel Trolley Road to North Main Street and pull into the Lowe’s parking lot at about 6:30. The parade to the ninth annual Lowe’s Safety Fair will be led by Summerville Fire and Rescue and Old Fort Fire Department. Early Morning Restaurant Fire

EASLEY– An early morning grill fire at The Huddle resulted in no injuries to employees or firefighters.

Capt. J.D. Willis with the Easley Fire Department said firefighters responded to the fire at the restaurant at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The fire was contained to the grill and caused no damage to the building, Willis said. (more…)

40-Year FF’s Still Going Strong

VAN WYCK –- Last year, Jim Williams seriously considered hanging up his fireman’s helmet.

After almost 40 years of service with the Charlotte Road/Van Wyck Volunteer Fire Department, Williams, then 78, felt the time was right. He had assisted in thousands of calls during his years of service and was looking at retiring.

That was until a call came in over the radio about a man trapped underneath a fallen tree. Williams heeded the call and was the first on the scene. (more…)

Student Helps 4 Escape Blaze

CHARLESTON — Matthew Stergar, a 22-year-old college student and former fireman, is being called a hero. He helped four people escape from a house fire in downtown Charleston. Fortunately for those people, Stergar tends to stay up late. Around 3:15 a.m. Sunday, he was watching television in his apartment near St. Philip and Line streets when he smelled smoke. (more…)

School Fire in Berkeley County

MACEDONIA – Firefighters responded to Bonner Elementary School for a reported fire in the rear of the main building. Multiple 911 calls inundated the Berkeley County Dispatch Center as personnel from up to eight fire departments responded to scene. (more…)

Officials Clarify Volunteer Response Following Fatal Fire

HORRY COUNTY — Horry County officials have clarified earlier remarks that suggested volunteer firefighters didn’t provide an adequate response during a fatal house fire on Sept. 14. Family Narrowly Escape Burning Home

SUMMERVILLE — Four people narrowly escaped disaster when the house they were in went up in flames Tuesday morning. It happened around 1:30 a.m. along Thames Avenue in Summerville. Investigators arrived just six minutes after the initial call came out but were forced to take a defensive position. They say the home was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. (more…)

Meeting May Dissolve Volunteer FD

SPARTANBURG COUNTY — The Arkwright Fire Department has served that Spartanburg County community since 1964. But years of financial difficulty have left it on the verge of being absorbed into two neighboring departments.

Commissioners for Arkwright, Roebuck and Croft fire districts are meeting Thursday to discuss a plan that would consolidate Arkwright. (more…)

Two Grandmothers Killed in Wreck

CHESNEE — A collision killed two women on Highway 11 in Chesnee Tuesday afternoon. According to Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened at 2:34 p.m. in front of 1458 Highway 11 in Spartanburg County, about 14 miles north of Spartanburg and just west of Chesnee. Early Morning Wrecks Kill Two

RICHLAND COUNTY —  Two separate vehicle collisions killed two people in Richland County Wednesday morning.

The first collision took place around 1:14 a.m. on Summitt Parkway in Northeast Richland County. According to state troopers, a Toyota truck was traveling south when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road and overturned.

The person died at the scene. Troopers say the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. (more…)

Woman Killed Rushing To Pick Up Child

WILLIAMSTON, S.C. — A woman died Tuesday morning in a wreck on a rural Anderson County road as she rushed to pick up her child, according to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office.

The victim was identified as Brandy C. Brock, 26, of Dorchester Road in Williamston, according to Deputy Coroner Don McCown.

The wreck happened on Garren Road near Crawford Road, about 2 miles south of Williamston, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. (more…)

SC Deputy Involved In Fatal Wreck

KINGSTREE — A Williamsburg County sheriff’s deputy has been involved in a wreck that killed the driver of the other vehicle.

The Morning News of Florence reported that Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins says the wreck happened late Monday afternoon about 15 miles northeast of Kingstree.

Collins says 41-year-old Deputy Tyrone Williams was traveling east on state Highway 261 in his patrol car when it struck a car traveling west. (more…)

Beachwear Blaze Under Investigation

HORRY COUNTY — Fire officials are investigating after a fire Monday night at a beachwear store. FF’s received a call around 8:20 p.m. about a report of smoke and fire on the roof of Pacific Beachwear at 894 Lake Arrowhead Road in the Myrtle Beach section of Horry County, according to authorities. The first fire unit on the scene saw fire behind a wall on the roof, said Horry County Fire Battalion Chief Missi Belflowers. (more…)

Change To Salaries Upsets FF’s

NINETY SIX — The 2010-11 budget for the town of Ninety Six was approved by the mayor and five out of six council members during a called town council meeting Monday night.

During a called vote, only councilman Todd Mullinax voted against the 2010-11 budget.

Tent Serving Well During Renovations

FOLLY BEACH — The emergency radio cackles and a dispatcher alerts emergency personnel, who grab their gear, crank up a firetruck and race out of a tent. Yes, a tent — but just until about mid-December. The Folly Beach Public Safety Department since April has housed its firetrucks, rescue vehicles and ATVs in a large, white tent, while the real fire station some two blocks away is being renovated and expanded (more…)

Man Dies in Early Morning Crash

FLORENCE — A Florence man died in head-on traffic collision early Monday morning, S.C. Highway Patrol reports show.

William Lambert Breeden III, 45, died at the scene of the crash, Florence County Coroner M.G. “Bubba” Matthews said.

The crash happened at 6:31a.m. on Papermill Road in Florence. A freightliner truck carrying wooden chips was traveling South on Papermill Road when it collided with Breeden’s 1991 Nissan truck, which was traveling in the opposing direction. (more…)

Volunteer FD Proud Of History

LANCASTER COUNTY — Randy White is trying to think of the right word.

White, assistant chief of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department, is talking about how he feels about being one of the firefighters who helped put out the blaze at the historic Lancaster County Courthouse on the morning of Aug. 4, 2008.

“Just thinking about it gives me cold chills,” he said. “I had the best vantage point. I was on top of the ladder (of the Elgin department’s ladder truck), holding the hose and spraying down on the roof. I was looking down on those hand-hewn beams, those beams that were made by men, what? Almost 200 years ago.” (more…)

Wreck Leave 1 Dead; 6 Injured

ORANGEBURG COUNTY — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a three car crash that left one dead and six injured on Sunday.

Officials said at approximately 11:20 a.m., a 45-year-old male was driving a Ford two-door eastbound on I-26 near the 143 mile marker. Officials said the driver traveled across the median, through the cable barriers, into oncoming traffic, and was struck by a Chevrolet. (more…)

Fire Burns Barn And Cars

SPARTANBURG COUNTY — A fire destroyed a man’s hobby shop at 420 Leona Court in Spartanburg County, according fire officials. The owner of the damaged hobby shop tells us he had 350 thousand dollars worth of cars, wreckers, and scrap metal in the barn. County E911 Celebrates 20 Years

CONWAY – Horry County E911 will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Friday, October 1.

According to press release, in October 1990, there were 12 dispatchers for the unincorporated areas of Horry County, four for fire and EMS, with only one working at any one time, in which all fire fighters at the time were volunteers and eight for police.

Citizens would have to call 7-digit numbers to ask for help and had to call their closest EMS station for medical assistance. (more…)

FF’s Battle More Than Flames

PINERIDGE — Firefighters in Pineridge battle more than fires. This past summer, firefighters teamed up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for the 2010 “Boot Drive”. The firefighters spent multiple weekends in the summer heat trying to “fill the boot”. These “Boot Drives” offer the community a chance to donate money that will be used in the battle against neuromuscular diseases. (more…)
