RIVERSIDE — Riverside Volunteer Fire Department was at a crossroads. The year was 2005. The issue was the future of the department. Jeff Walden, then the assistant chief and now the chief, set up a meeting. He called it a “commitment meeting.” “We were struggling with manpower, struggling to keep the doors open,” Walden said. “There was a lot of grumbling going on about changes in county, state and federal requirements.” (more…)
