Public Safety Department Splits

SURFSIDE BEACH — The town of Surfside Beach officially has separate police and fire departments again.

Tuesday night, with a unanimous second reading, the Surfside Beach Town Council finalized a decision it made during its budget process to eliminate the public safety department and create a police department and fire department.

Councilman Mark Johnson, chairman of the subcommittee in charge of the separation process, said the decision to separate the department was to more or less to return it to its natural state. (more…)
