HILTON HEAD — Hilton Head Island’s red firetrucks have gone green.
The Town of Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division is using technology to reduce the amount of harmful substances spewed into the air by its trucks. The division replaced its fleet during the past two years with 10 new firetrucks that use the latest “green” diesel-engine design. (more…)

Fire Resembles 50 Other Arson Cases
CHARLESTON — Fire officials are investigating another arson in downtown Charleston that bears a striking resemblance to more than 50 other arson cases in the last few years. Officials say the fire at 258 St. Philip St. happened at 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Investigators say the suspect set fire to either a love seat or chair that were left on the second floor porch. (more…)

FOIA Hearing Cancelled
SPARTANBURG — A court hearing that had been scheduled in the state’s first criminal prosecution of alleged Freedom of Information Act violations has been deemed unnecessary.
Richland County Magistrate W.H. Womble Jr., who is presiding over the case in Spartanburg, canceled the hearing after all four defendants — Holly Springs Fire District Commissioners Ryan Phillips, Kelly Waters and Roscoe Kyle, and ex-commissioner Clarence Gibbs — requested a jury trial, his office confirmed. Smoke Alarm Inspection And Pizza
PAWLEYS ISLAND – The Midway Fire Rescue Department along with Deroma’s Pizza and Domino’s Pizza of Pawleys Island announce the Delivering Fire Safety Program.
In an effort to promote fire and life safety, the Midway Fire Rescue Department will deliver pizza dinner in the Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach communities.
Upon arrival, fire department personnel will ask the homeowner if they can inspect the smoke alarms in the home. (more…)
Woman Killed In I-26 Wreck
JEDBURG — A 21-year-old Mount Pleasant woman died Sunday night following a single-car wreck that happened on a deadly stretch of Interstate 26
The wreck happened about 11:25 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 at the 190 mile marker, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.
A 2004 Nissan ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree during heavy rain, authorities said. (more…)

Colleton Fights 2nd Fire on Same Shift
WALTERBORO – Colleton Fire & Rescue responded to a reported structure fire at 90 Gentry Lane late Thursday evening September 23rd at around midnight.
Stations 1, 19, 24 and 26 responded to the call with the first arriving within 6 minutes. Upon arrival Colleton’s Bravest found a structure approximately 70% involved. (more…)
Store Lawyers Call for Sanctions Over Fire Records
CHARLESTON – Lawyers for Sofa Super Store want a judge to penalize the city of Charleston for failing to turn over thousands of documents from an expert panel that investigated the deadly 2007 blaze at its West Ashley showroom. At issue are some 47,000 pages of material produced by a six-member team of fire experts hired by the city to probe the June 18, 2007, blaze that killed nine Charleston firefighters. (more…)
2nd Alarm Blaze Keeps Colleton’s Bravest busy
WALTERBORO – Stations 5, 17, 19 and 26 responded to a structure fire at 6222 Augusta Highway at 0600, Thursday morning 23-September. Engine 26 arrived to report a two story wood frame dwelling 100 percent involved. The building was located about 200 feet off of the roadway on a rural stretch of highway and had been burning for some time. (more…)

Investigators Found Accelerants, Arson Book at Firefighter’s Home
Traces of accelerants and a book about arson were found in the Okatie home of a Bluffton Township Fire District captain and his ex-wife, who are accused of setting fire to their house in 2008, according to arrest warrants drafted by the Solicitor’s Office. (more…)

Battle Continues Over Truck Insurance
JASPER COUNTY — The battle over a recently purchased fire truck came to a head Monday night in Jasper County.
The Levy Volunteer Fire Department took its battle with the county to a council meeting. Firefighters said the department bought a new fire truck with the understanding that the county would pay the insurance on it.
But when the truck was actually purchased, firefighters said the county backed out. Chairman George Hood said the volunteer fire department didn’t go through the proper channels before making the purchase. (more…)

Department Welcomes First Paid FF’s
TEGA CAY — The men and women of the Tega Cay Volunteer Fire Department will soon have some new help.
However the newcomers, slated to start on Sept. 27, are not volunteers.
“These are our first paid people,” Fire Chief Scott Szymanski said. “I’m ecstatic.”
Justin Dailey, 23, and Dan Tucker, 41, are cleared to officially join the department. Each of the full-time firefighters will earn about $33,500 a year, City Manager Grant Duffield said. That amount does not include benefits and uniforms, Duffield said. (more…)

County, City Considering 911 merger
LANCASTER – Local officials now have a better idea of what it will take for the county to have a more efficient 911 system. There are now two 911 systems here – one at the Municipal Justice Center in Lancaster that serves the city of Lancaster and another at the sheriff’s office that provides service for the rest of the county. Antique Store Damaged in Fire
SENECA — A Seneca antiques store suffered water damage after a small fire Saturday morning. Fire alarms alerted firefighters at 9:30 a.m., and the Seneca Fire Department responded quickly. But by the time firefighters reached the store Porta Protese on Ram Cat Alley, the sprinklers had damaged many of the antiques, said Capt. Jan Oliver of the fire department.
