Victims Identified in House Fire

GREER — The Greenville County coroner identified the two bodies found inside a burned-out home in Greer.

The fire broke out Thursday at about 1 a.m. on Crusoe Cove near Lake Robinson. Deputies believe the fire started in the front living room area.

According to the coroner, the victims were 50-year-old Nick Vanpelt and 48-year-old Christine Baudas. (more…)

FF’s Head to Combat Challenge

HORRY COUNTY — Horry County firefighters will hit the road Thursday for the National Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge competition in Florida.

Team Horry trains all year for the event and says it does make them better at their jobs, but they also enjoy the thrill of the competition. (more…)

Restaurants Rebuild Following Fires

CONWAY — While the natural beauty of the City of Conway is enough to attract people from all over the area, the city has a number of unique businesses to attract visitors as well.

There are at least 100 local businesses in downtown ranging from whimsical boutiques and gift shops, to consignment stores, law offices and doctor’s offices, restaurants, art galleries, and bridal shops. (more…)

Another FD Dons Pink to Support Breast Cancer

GEORGETOWN — Just because the primary colors of most fire engines mix together to make pink, it’s not every day that firefighters wear pink. But at departments across the Eastern Carolinas, firefighters are doing just that: donning pink t-shirts to wear as part of their uniforms, all in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention. Major Fire at Carpet Company

SUMMERVILLE — More than fifty firefighters and emergency responders are on scene of a business fire in Summerville. Summerville firefighters said the call came in just before 2pm Monday. The Carpet Care Services business on Highway 78 was fully engulfed when they arrived. Ironically, the business specializes in fire, flood, and disaster restoration. (more…)

Life Saving Message Delivered to School

GREENVILLE — Captain Phillip Brown of the Mauldin Fire Dept. said many children will hide from firefighters because they do not recognize them when they are wearing their firefighting gear.

“They like to hide in fires,” Brown said.

Brown traveled to Cashion Elementary School on Monday to tell kindergartners and second-graders the story of “The Fire Chief King.” (more…)

New Rescue Christened with “Wash Down”

SANDY RUN — A unique “Wash Down” ceremony was held in the Sandy Run community to dedicate the Calhoun County Station No. 31 Volunteer Fire Department’s new rescue unit on Oct. 9. The “Wash Down” ceremony is a tradition in the fire service to welcome a new apparatus. The tradition dates back to when the fire service used horse-drawn fire wagons. (more…)

Council Gives Initial OK to Dissolve FD

SPARTANBURG COUNTY — Spartanburg County Council on Monday gave unanimous approval to the first of three readings of a plan that will consolidate Arkwright Fire District into neighboring Croft and Roebuck.

Most of the council’s questions involved Arkwright’s debt — which will be refinanced at a lower interest rate — and the level of fire service people in that area would receive. (more…)

Fire Draws State Environmental Officials

SUMMERVILLE — State environmental officials planned to take water samples from the Ashley River Tuesday after a fire caused heavy damage today at a fire and disaster restoration company in Summerville. Firefighters were dispatched to Carpet Care Services and DisasterCare at 403 East 5th North Street just before 2 p.m., said Old Fort Fire Chief Ed Genthart. (more…)

FF’s Pull Woman from Burning Home

JAMES ISLAND — A woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries early this morning after firefighters pulled her from a burning home. Firefighters responded to 301 Howle Ave. just off Maybank Highway about 3 a.m. Tuesday and found parts of the home engulfed in flames, James Island Fire Chief Chris Seabolt said. (more…)

Couple Hosts Rekindle Society Event

LANCASTER — Louis Fenchel joined the Worthington (Ky.) Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 16. That’s a little too young to become a firefighter. And the fire department had to bend its age requirement to accommodate. But there were some other factors. “This was in 1965. Vietnam was in full swing and there were few able-bodied men left in the area,” Fenchel said. (more…)

Plans for Building on Fire Site

SENECA — The ashes from the fire that damaged the old Seneca Baptist Church building over the weekend are not yet cold, but the Latino evangelical group that owns the property is already thinking about the future. “We very much hope to continue our plans,” said Bani Estrada, spokesman with the Iglesia La Luz del Mundo. “We will just have to wait and see what we can do.” (more…)

FD Teams with Local Business on Fire Prevention

EASLEY — The batteries sold at Batteries Plus power many things from lights to cars to boats. Many 9-volt Batteries Plus batteries will be powering a special initiative the next few weeks — a program aimed at keeping local families safe from fire. As part of the National Fire Prevention Week effort, Batteries Plus donated many 9-volt batteries to the Easley Fire Department. (more…)

Fire Department Seeks Volunteers

GEORGETOWN — Volunteer firefighters are being sought to increase the ranks among the Georgetown Fire Department, according to officials.

On Monday, city fire officials announced today “a massive campaign to recruit volunteer firefighters,” Fire Chief Joey Tanner said.

“We’re looking for anyone who wants to be a part of a team to help the community,” Tanner said. Volunteers will receive basic firefighting training to include structural firefighting skills, basic first aid and CPR, he said. (more…)

Island FF’s Battle House Fire

WADAMALAW ISLAND -– Officials are investigating a fire that happened Sunday night on Wadamalaw Island.

Investigators have not released any more information about the house fire that occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

The St. Johns Fire Department responded to the house fire at 1794 Little Smith Road off Maybank Highway. (more…)

Fire Destroys Old Church

SENECA — Fire gutted a century-old landmark in Seneca late Saturday evening, according to firefighters. Firefighters said a structure fire broke out just before 11 p.m. at La Luz del Mundo Church, formerly the Seneca Baptist Church building, in downtown Seneca. Responding firefighters said the fire had already spread into the attic by the time they arrived, forcing them to evacuate. (more…)

Fire Department Will Expand

SALEM – The town of Salem will be expanding its fire department, in line with its new contract with Oconee County to provide fire service in the surrounding unincorporated area.

The Salem Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to authorize the hiring of two part-time firefighters.

Salem Fire Chief Kevin Wilbanks said job offers to two candidates could be made as early as today. (more…)

Training Courses Come to High School

LANCASTER COUNTY — Lancaster County fire officials are partnering with the local school district in an effort to get more teenagers involved in the fire service.

The School Career Firefighter Training Program is slated to begin at the start of the next school year. Upon completion of the two-year program, a student participant will have all of the required certifications of a paid firefighter.

Morris Russell, the county’s fire service director, hopes the program will lead to increased membership at the local fire departments. (more…)

FF’s Wear Pink

SENECA — Seneca firefighters are in the pink and it is not just that they are fit. Firefighters are wearing pink in October to raise awareness about breast cancer. “This is our third year wearing the pink uniform T-shirts and it started with some of our employees, who have had spouses or mothers go through the traumatic process of breast cancer and the treatment,” said Fire Chief Shane Phillips. Firefighting Is “In Their Blood”

LANCASTER COUNTY — “It’s in your blood.”

That’s something writers from The Lancaster News who worked on the Always on Call series, a series that focused on the 19 fire departments in Lancaster County, heard over and over again from firefighters, most of whom are volunteers and not paid for their service, about why they do what they do.

Two Bodies Found Inside Burning Home

GREER — Investigators are trying to determine how two people whose bodies were found inside a burning Greer home on Thursday morning died. The fire happened at 30 Crusoe Cove near Lake Robinson off Highway 101 about 1:15 a.m. Firefighters said that when they arrived at the scene, the home was engulfed in flames. Long-Awaited Study of Charleston Fire Coming

CHARLESTON — A long-awaited federal study of a fire that killed nine South Carolina firefighters in a furniture store more than three years ago will be released later this month.

The Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md., has been studying the June 2007 blaze that gutted the Sofa Super Store.

Institute spokesman Michael Newman said Thursday the draf study will be released Oct. 28 with no advance copies released to local government officials. (more…)

Residents Can Help FF’s

LANCASTER COUNTY — County fire officials are asking residents to consider whether their property is accessible by large fire trucks and other emergency vehicles.

Tree limbs growing over driveways, and driveways in poor condition can slow response time to an emergency by fire departments and Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services, said Morris Russell, director of Lancaster County Emergency Management and Fire Service. (more…)

Chief’s Disclosure Maintains Public Trust

BURTON — Burton Fire Chief Harry Rountree made what must have been a difficult and embarrassing admission last week. However, his revelation that someone in his department might have stolen money intended for charity was not only the right thing to do,it also serves the long-term interest of a department dedicated to the civic good.
