Large Fire Burns in Columbia
COLUMBIA – Heavy black smoke is rolling across the Columbia Fairgrounds… again… as an old warehouse in the Old Farmers Market burns.
Heavy fire and explosions can be heard from inside the structure. As smoke billows from the aging structure Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins stated that the building is scheduled for demolition. The same building burned last month. (more…)
4 Hospitalized in House Fire
GREENVILLE - Four people were taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after the home they were in burned from the inside, according to the Greenville Fire Department. Battalion Chief Sidney Farmer said the fire was called in just before 5:30 a.m. Five adults were inside the two-bedroom home on Skyland Drive when the fire broke out, he said.(more…)

Early Morning Fire Destroys Home
LEXINGTON – A fire has destroyed a long vacant home in Lexington County; luckily no one was hurt.

FORT MILL — A Fort Mill man faces charges after deputies say he impersonated an officer during a traffic stop and tried to pull over another car. FF’s To Run Race In Full Gear To Honor Fallen Comrade
IRMO — Midlands firefighters are honoring one of their own. Chance Zobel, 23, was hit and killed by a car while battling a grass fire on interstate 20 about a week and a half ago. Instead of running in jogging shoes and shorts, firefighters suited up in full gear for the annual 5k Sleigh Bell Trot on Tuesday at Saluda Shoals Park in Irmo. They’re preparing for a three-mile race in heavy gear to show their support. (more…)

Essential Emergency Fix
CHARLESTON COUNTY — The county’s consolidated emergency communications system has been touted as a way to provide better response by fire, police and emergency medical services over the whole of Charleston County. Our Sunday news report, however, revealed that the essential service suffers from serious shortcomings, particularly in the East Cooper area. Fortunately, County Council is on the track to begin making the necessary improvements.

Family Home Destroyed
CHARLESTON — No one was hurt Wednesday in a house fire at 6 Berwick Circle in West Ashley. A 15-year-old boy was home at the time of the fire, said Mark Ruppel, public information officer for the Charleston Fire Department. According to homeowner Mike Seifstein, his son was watching TV downstairs and saw smoke coming from the vents. (more…)

EMS Workers File Suit Over Pay
LANCASTER COUNTY — More than 50 current and past Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services workers are suing the county for overtime pay they say they’re owed.
In a suit filed in federal district court last month, EMS workers claim the county violated the national Fair Labor Standards Act. The class-action suit claims the county owes EMS employees money for years of unpaid overtime compensation.
David Rothstein, an employment and labor law attorney with Greenville-based Rothstein Law Firm, is representing the EMS workers who filed the suit. As of Wednesday, he said 51 people had joined the suit. (more…)
Separate Fires Displace 2 Families
CHARLESTON AREA — Separate fires Monday morning forced two Lowcountry families from their homes.
The first was about 6:30 a.m. at 225 Spann Lane, off Whitesville Road.
The fire appeared to be caused by an electrical short near the water heater, which set the master bedroom on fire, Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department Chief Scott Lee said. He said the mobile home is probably a total loss. The Whitesville Fire Department assisted. (more…)

Chesnee Native Accepts Chief Position
SPARTANBURG — A Chesnee native is returning to his home county as fire chief in Spartanburg.
Marion Blackwell, chief of the Stillwater, Okla., Fire Department, will begin his duties as fire chief with the city of Spartanburg’s fire division on Dec. 31, according to a written statement from the Spartanburg Public Safety Department.
Blackwell is a native of Chesnee and began his fire service career as a volunteer with the Chesnee Volunteer Fire Department, where he served from 1979 to 1991. From 1991 to 1995, he worked as a police officer for the town of Chesnee and was named police chief in 1995. (more…)
Fire Destroys Rental Home
MOUNT PLEASANT — Firefighters extinguished a blaze on Rifle Range Tuesday night and then returned to the house 12 hours later after the fire rekindled.
Mount Pleasant firefighters first responded to the house at 1767 Rifle Range Road at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and found the back, left corner of the vacant rental house engulfed, according to Battalion Chief Steve Drozd. (more…)

Arson Not Suspected In Thrift Store Fire
GEORGETOWN — The exact cause of Sunday night’s fire that destroyed a popular Georgetown thrift store has not been determined. But fire officials say arson is not suspected.
The 2nd Chance Thrift Store on North Fraser was leveled by the blaze that took more than six hours to extinguish.
On Monday, owner Amanda McCants viewed the charred debris of clothing, furniture, shoes and books in the business on North Fraser Street. (more…)

Radio System Disaster Waiting To Happen
CHARLESTON — Sheriff’s Deputy Murray Fink found himself in a desperate fight after discovering cocaine on a driver he had stopped outside a Mount Pleasant drug store. The man pushed, shoved and kicked the deputy in a bid to escape. Fink fired his Taser and blasted the driver with pepper spray, but the man kept fighting. (more…)
Laundromat Fire Leaves Three Homeless
COLUMBIA — Three people are without homes after the laundromat under their apartment caught fire Sunday. Nearly two dozen Firefighters fought the flames at the Olympia Wash and Dry off Olympia Avenue in Columbia Sunday afternoon, but the building was destroyed. Victim In Fiery Crash Identified
RICHLAND COUNTY — Officials have identified the woman who died in a fiery crash Sunday night on Percival Road near I-77.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim as 20-year-old Layla Gumati of Columbia.
Columbia firefighters were called to the accident scene around 6:45 p.m. Sunday night to extinguish a vehicle fire. Once the fire was out, crews discovered a body inside the vehicle. (more…)

FF’s Battle Blaze For 4 Hours
GEORGETOWN — After more than four hours, a fire inside a Georgetown consignment shop is out. Crews are still working on hot spots and checking inside walls for flames.
Officials said the store front would have to be removed from the building on Frasier Street because of damage. The roof also collapsed during the fire.
Four blocks on either side of the 100 block of Frasier Street are still closed as crews investigate the blaze. (more…)
