Camera Operator Dies From Burns

GOOSE CREEK – Jeremy Shultz, a free-lance camera operator who traveled the country shooting sports for national networks, died this morning from injuries sustained in a Dec. 30 fire. Shultz was 37. Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said Shultz died at 5:39 a.m. at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta. Shultz has been in critical condition at the hospital since he sustained burns over 90 percent of his body. (more…)

January 28th: CLINTON – A man who was working in Clinton Thursday afternoon shot dramatic video as flames tore through a home. Ross Ledford said he was working across the street from the home on Martha Dendy Drive when he saw the fire just after 2 p.m. Ledford said firefighters were able to extinguish the flames pretty quickly. He said a 78-year-old woman lives in the house, but firefighters told him that she was not home at the time. There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire. 4 Fires In 2 Days Under Investigation

ANDERSON - Arson investigators are looking for information from the public about four home fires in two days in Anderson.

Anderson firefighters were called to the fires from Saturday to Monday in the same general area. Arson investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fires and if they are connected. (more…)

Fire Destroys Old Pelzer Train Depot

PELZER – Firefighters battled flames at an old train depot in Pelzer this morning. West Pelzer, Whitefield, Powdersville and Cheddar firefighters responded to Lyman and Courtney streets, near S.C. 8, shortly after 3 a.m. Ladder trucks with crews working high above the flames were needed to get the fire under control. A thick, white smoke blanketed much of the neighborhood surrounding the fire for several hours. (more…)

Volunteer FF’s Used Fire Tools to Steal Copper

NORTH – Three men, including two volunteer firefighters have been arrested in connection with recent copper thefts in Orangeburg County. Chief Mark P. Fallaw of the North Police Department announced Friday that the North Police Department, the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office this week arrested Jeffrey McQueen Riley, Jr., 21, Johnathon Ryan Carter, 24 and Daniel Addison Carter, 17, all of Ridgeville, SC. January 19th: SPARTANBURG – Firefighters said three workers suffered burns during a fire at a Spartanburg plant Wednesday morning. The fire happened at the Odermath USA plant at 2751 New Cut Road about 8 a.m. Firefighters said that the workers’ injuries were minor. They said the plant manager suffered burns to his head, neck and face. All three workers were taken to a local hospital to be treated. (more…)

2 Dead in Grand Strand Plane Crash

N.MYRTLE BEACH – Horry County Coroner is reporting that 2 people are confirmed fatal in a plane crash just off of Hwy.17 in Briarcliffe RV Resorts Park. The fatalities are the pilot and a woman in the RV that the plane struck. The woman’s husband was burned and transported to the hospital. Another person was slightly burned and refused transport. Father, 2 Sons Die in Fire

LEXINGTON – A father and his two young sons died in a pre-dawn fire Sunday in rural Lexington County, relatives said later Sunday. The father, 39, died trying to save the lives of two of his sons, ages three and four, relatives said. (more…)

January 11th: ROCK Hill - The National Transportation Safety Board says pilot error probably caused a South Carolina plane crash that killed a North Carolina businessman. William ‘Skipper’ Beck died when his Cirrus SR22 crashed and burned as he practiced landings and takeoffs Sept. 11, 2009, at the Rock Hill/York County Airport. The NTSB report said the probable cause was the pilot’s failure to maintain control and altitude when maneuvering after takeoff. Beck had a small part- ownership of the Charlotte Bobcats. He usually flew with a certified flight instructor but was practicing alone. The airplane was new and had been flown only about 93 hours. The report says there was no evidence of mechanical problems.

January 10th: SALEM - The winter storm complicated response by Firefighters to a fire that left a home destroyed. The call to 231 Crooked L Road presented Firefighters with a combination of a narrow road and snowy conditions made the response difficult. No one was injured in the fire that destroyed the home. Firefighters from Salem, Pickett Post-Camp Oak and Keowee Ebenezer Fire Departments responded, in addition to Oconee County’s Station 21.

January 10th: GREENWOOD – No injuries were reported in connection with a fire on a CSX train in Greenwood County. According to Greenwood County Fire Coordinator Corey Grumelot, emergency dispatch received a call at about an engine was on fire on a train traveling east near Highway 10 and Briarwood Road. The fire was located on the pusher engine which was 2nd in line. The fire did not extend and was contained to that individual engine. No cause was given as of presss time. Highway 10 was blocked for about two hours while Firefighters battled the blaze.

January 10th: GREENWOOD – A Greenwood man was killed morning in a one-car wreck. According to Greenwood County Coroners Office, Jerry Lee Smith, 49, of 517 Siloam Church Road, Greenwood died from massive chest trauma in the wreck. The chief deputy coroner said no autopsy would be performed and SLED would be conducting a toxicology exam. Officials said the wreck occurred early Monday morning on East Cambridge Avenue Extension. Smith was driving east in a 1998 Ford F-150 when he crossed into the west-bound lane, running off the road, hitting a ditch and being ejected. He was not wearing his seat belt. He died later at Self Regional Medical Center. Alcohol does not appear to be involved. Severe winter weather in the area most likely contributed to the crash.

January 10th: NORTH CHARLESTONOne person was injured in a fire that caused heavy damage to a house in early Monday. North Charleston Firefighters were called to a residence on Boulevard Lane at 4:42 a.m. Firefighters reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the house on arrival. The fire was quickly brought under control, but extensive damage to the home. The victim was taken by Charleston County EMS to a hospital. No information about the extent of the injuries or condition. The fire is under investigation

January 9th: MANNING –  More than four Clarendon County fire engines responded to a mobile home fire Sunday afternoon off Little Star Road in Manning.  Within 10 minutes, most of the mobile home’s contents were burned, and Clarendon County firefighters worked until about 5:15 p.m. to get the blaze out. ”It’s still too early at this time to know exactly what happened,” said volunteer Battalion Chief H.P. “Mutt” Bozard. No cause was given as of press time.

FF’s Ready For New Facility

FLORENCE – The Florence Fire Department has a new tool to aid in helping keep Florence safe. The tool isn’t an axe or fire engine, but rather an 18,000 square-foot training center off of Mechanicsville Road that will be used to keep firefighters’ skills sharp in case of an emergency. It will help members of surrounding fire departments, as well. (more…)

Lowcountry Home Destroyed by Fire

State Fire News Roundup

January 9th: SCRANTON – A call came in around 9 p.m. Friday evening reporting a mobile home fire on Locklear Road near Scranton in Florence County. It is not known at this time if anyone was home at the time, or what started the fire that completely destroyed the mobile home. South Lynches Fire Department investigated the blaze.

January 9th: BEECH ISLAND – Two women were killed in a head-on collision in Beech Island Saturday night. Brenda Adams, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the 1800 block of S.C. Highway 278. Sheila Roberts, 54, was a rear seat passenger in the crash, and was pronounced dead at the Medical College of Georgia a short while later. Another front seat passenger, Jodi Stein, received non-life threatening injuries. All three are from Aiken.

January 8th: MT. PLEASANT – A fire destroyed a home at 629 Bridlewood Lane this afternoon, displacing a family of four adults, according to a press release from the American Red Cross. The Red Cross assisted the family and provided them with temporary shelter in a nearby hotel and financial assistance to help replace their food and clothing lost in the fire. Volunteers also provided the family with comfort kits that contain personal emergency supplies, such as toiletries.

January 8th: HARDEVILLE - Richard Prescott, 62, of Hardeeville died early Friday morning in a fire at his home on Barker Street. The fire department was alerted to the fire before 3 a.m., according to Hardeeville Fire Department Chief Dan Morgan. Although firefighters arrived in less than five minutes after being notified, the house was already “fully involved,” Morgan said.

January 8th: GREENVILLE - A restaurant full of patrons had to be evacuated Saturday night because of a small fire. It happened at about 6:40 p.m at City Range on Haywood Road in Greenville. Greenville firefighters responded two minutes later, and found smoke inside the restaurant and dozens of people standing outside.

January 7th: JASPER COUNTY – On Ohio man was killed early New Year’s Day after driving off Interstate 95 and hitting a tree. The wreck happened at about 4:40 a.m. near the 26 mile marker, about a mile-and-a-half north of Ridgeland. Joseph Russo, 54, of Northfield, Ohio, was driving south on the interstate when his vehicle ran off the road into the median and struck a tree, said Cpl. Paul Brouthers of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

January 5th: CLARENDON COUNTY – An early morning fire Monday on Jarrett Road outside New Zion caused Clarendon County firefighters to initially believe someone was entrapped in the mobile home there. Four engines responded to the blaze, which began about 7 a.m. in the Barrineau Trailer Park. Information about the owner of the home or about damages to the property were not availably at press time Monday, but a firefighter at the scene said that no one was harmed in the fire.

January 4th: CLINTON – Clinton Public Safety officials responded to a call Tuesday around 9 a.m. about a fire at 305 Gordon Street. James King, who was in the home at the time of the fire, has been transported to the hospital, where his condition is unknown, according to CPS director Stacy Drakeford. A woman was also in the home when the fire ignited, but was not harmed. Drakeford said a candle is believed to be the source of the fire.

Trapped 315-Pound Paraplegic Rescued From Burning Home

INMAN – An elderly 315 pound paraplegic man was rescued from a burning home this morning. Inman’s Bravest responded this morning around 6:05 this morning. There were a total of three people in the home at the time of the blaze.

January 7th: PAWLEYS ISLAND - A fire in the 8900 block of Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island and one in the 5100 block of Berkeley Street in Murrells Inlet are both labeled as suspicious. The Pawleys Island fire, which occurred Dec. 30, destroyed an abandoned trailer. Fire officials said the blaze may have been intentionally set because there has been no electricity in the structure for many years. The Murrells Inlet fire occurred New Year’s night and caused about $2,000 worth of damage to an apartment.

January 6th: LANCASTER – One person died and another was injured in an early morning mobile home fire on Dudley Steele Road in the Unity community. Officials said the fire started about 4:40 a.m. The survivor was driven to the hospital.

January 5th: LEXINGTON COUNTY – A truck fire caused quite a scene on Interstate 26 during rush hour Wednesday morning. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s website, troopers responded to mile marker 112 on I-26 around 7:30 a.m. for a vehicle on fire.

January 4th: LONGSThree people were taken to the hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation after they put out a fire that nearly burned down two mobile homes. The outdoor burn on JC Drive in the Longs community got out of control around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon. The fire got under one of the mobile homes and caused minor damage to the underside of the home.

January 4th: FLORENCE – A Florence woman died Tuesday morning in a head-on traffic collision on Interstate 95 in Florence County. Florence County Coroner M.G. “Bubba” Matthews said the woman’s identity will be released pending notification of her next of kin.

January 4th: LEXINGTON - A single-wide mobile home, on the 3100 block of Greenwood Drive in West Columbia, was destroyed in a fire early Tuesday morning. No one was home when a neighbor called to report the blaze, he said. The fire caused about $2,000 worth of property damage to the mobile home, which was located , he said.

January 4th: ROCK HILL – Firefighters rescued a small cat from a burning home Monday afternoon in Rock Hill. The fire started around 2 p.m. at 451 Hemlock Ave. No one was injured, said Rock Hill Fire Department Capt. Joseph Mitchell. A resident told police he was gone about 30 minutes and returned to the find the house on fire, according to a Rock Hill police report. No appliances were left on, he said.

January 3rd: UNION - A woman was hospitalized Monday after she made sure her family had evacuated their burning home and she had to kick out a window and jump to escape. Firefighters were called to the home on Hancock Street in Union County just before 9 a.m. The home is occupied by a couple, their son and daughter-in-law and their two children.

January 1st: HAMPTON COUNTY - It’s been a very busy holiday season for Hampton County emergency responders. Between Christmas Eve and Monday, Jan. 3, Hampton County EMS has responded to 94 calls, including several serious automobile accidents. Hampton County fire departments have also responded to numerous brush fires throughout the holiday week.

One Dies, Another Hurt in Fire

UNITY – An early-morning blaze Thursday took the life of a Lancaster County woman and left her husband with serious injuries. Officials received a call at about 4:40 a.m. about a fire at a mobile home on Dudley Steele Road, which is off Shiloh Unity Road, about 8 miles northeast of the Lancaster city limits. Longtime Battalion Chief Retires

SUMMERVILLE – Battalion Chief Stephen J. Leslie worked his last shift for the Summerville Fire Department last week, bringing to a close a long, honorable, and successful career. After 37 years, 11 months and 11 days, he is very pleased and still pleasantly surprised at the way things turned out for him. Richard Mincey Passes Away

WEST COLUMBIA – Richard Toal Mincey, 78, passed away at Dorn VA Medical Center on Thursday evening, December 30, 2010. He fought a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases but lived a quality life at home through the love and care of his devoted wife of 55 years, Patricia Ann Ferguson Mincey, whom he affectionately called,“TrishAnn.” (more…)

Fire Ordeal Devastating for Couple

GOOSE CREEK – Jeremy Shultz was supposed to be in New Orleans tonight to videotape the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Instead, the 37-year-old freelance camera operator remains in critical condition at the Augusta, Ga., burn center after he caught fire in front of his girlfriend and their 3-year-old son during a Dec. 30th blaze that destroyed their home. 2 Men Die in Wreck

N. AUGUSTA – Gregory Lake Road was the scene of two traffic fatalities late Sunday night as two young North Augusta men lost their lives when their vehicle left the roadway and traveled through a stand of trees, coming to rest several hundred feet from the first point of impact. (more…)
