LAURENS – A Ware Shoals man died two minutes from his house Saturday when his plane crashed into a field near a farm. An autopsy on Sunday revealed Robert Burdette, 69, died of blunt-force trauma to the head and chest, said Vickie Cheek, chief deputy coroner of Laurens County. (more…)

Family Displaced by Fire
ANDERSON — A Tuesday morning house fire has left an Anderson woman and her four daughters homeless. The fire was reported at 11:23 a.m., and smoke was pouring out of the roof of the rental home at S. 612 Fant St. when firefighters arrived. City of Anderson Fire Capt. Jamie Parnell said a stove caused the fire, which gutted the kitchen and caused smoke damage throughout the dwelling. (more…)

Woman Tries to Save House with Garden Hose
SUMMERVILLE — Firefighters spent much of Friday morning putting out a fire at a home on Pointer Drive in the Quail Arbor Subdivision in Summerville. Old Fort Fire Department responded to the fire just before 3 a.m. Friday. When firefighters arrived, the garage was on fire and the women in the home was trying to put the fire out with a garden hose. (more…)

Elevated Wildfire Risk Continues
MYRTLE BEACH — An elevated risk for wildfires continues today after area firefighters were busy during the weekend battling several blazes, according to authorities.
Strong winds from the southwest and low relative humidity increase the chance of wildfires today, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C. Winds will average 15 to 20 mph with gusts more than 30 mph. Humidity will fall to 35 percent inland and 40 percent along the coast. (more…)

Goose Creek Fire Goes 2 Alarms
GOOSE CREEK — No one was injured but six people, four of them children, were left homeless by a fire Sunday night on North Pembroke Drive. “No one was home,” Goose Creek Fire Chief Steve Chapman said. “They had gone out to dinner.” (more…)
13 Year Old Charged With Arson
GOOSE CREEK – Police have charged a 13-year-old boy in connection with a fire that caused nearly $5,000 worth of damage to a home in Goose Creek. WCSC-TV reports that Goose Creek police charged the boy with third-degree arson for the Friday house fire. Authorities say the boy was playing at the back of the house with other boys and took out a lighter and set the grass on fire. Detectives say the other boys didn’t know the teen was going to start the fire. Police say they fled the scene when they realized they couldn’t put the fire out. The boy was charged and released to his father. No injuries were reported.
FF’s Respond to Hotel Fire
MYRTLE BEACH — Myrtle Beach fire officials and police are investigating trash can fires set at the Landmark Resort, 1501 S. Ocean Blvd., said Battalion Chief Bruce Arnel.
Firefighters were dispatched this evening about the fires at the hotel. The fire is now under control.
Two trash cans were set on fire on the 3rd and 14th floors of the hotel, Arnel said. (more…)

FD Looks to Escape Millage Rate Cap
FLORENCE — The Johnsonville Rural Fire District is looking to make a change that would provide an opportunity to increase its millage rates, which have been frozen since the 1990s, leaders say. A paragraph in the state’s home rule act allowed for the establishment of the fire district, said Florence attorney Ben Zeigler, who is working with the district on the matter. (more…)

International Rescue Competition Headed to SC
MYRTLE BEACH — A big event is headed to the Grand Strand, and South Carolina for the first time.
It’s an emergency training competition, a lot like the World Firefighter Combat Challenge that came to Myrtle Beach back in November.
It’s called the 2011 International Auto Extrication Competition, and emergency personnel will be competing to save lives in simulated car accidents. (more…)

Fire Destroys New Church
ELLOREE — Fire has destroyed a new church in Orangeburg County.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported the fire started around 9 a.m. Monday at the Body of Christ Ministries in Elloree.
The fire caused an estimated $120,000 damage to the building formerly occupied by a dry cleaner. (more…)

Governor Haley Meets With Leaders About Plant Fire
HARTSVILLE — South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley arrived in Hartsville Wednesday afternoon to tour the scene of the Agrium US Fertilizer Plant fire.
Governor Haley met privately with the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, first responders and Hartsville city leaders. She says she’s concerned about the affects of the fire and smoke on the environment and the 60 displaced workers. The governor added that she was amazed by the devastation she saw at the site. FF’s Certify as Wildland Firefighters
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Fire Chief Tom Barstow announced Tuesday that five North Myrtle Beach firefighters have earned their red card certification from the South Carolina Forestry Commission as Wildland Firefighters.
Those who received their red card certification were Captain Mike Davis, Firefighter/EMT Aaron Asbury, Firefighter/EMT Brad Infante, Firefighter/EMT Darrin Jacques, and Firefighter/Paramedic James Vreeland. (more…)

Brush Fire Outbreak
MIDLANDS — Fire officials are urging caution as breezy, dry conditions have helped promote some brush and woods fires in the Midlands this week.
A small woods fire was reported to the Lexington County Fire Service on Tuesday morning near Swansea. Overall on Tuesday, six fires were reported to or by the Forestry Commission in the Midlands counties of Lexington, York and Sumter, burning a total of 33 acres. Only one, a 1-acre fire in Sumter County, caused significant property damage. That 2:30 p.m. fire caused $10,000 in damage, according to the Forestry Commission. (more…)

City Council Accepts FEMA Grant
BAMBERG — Bamberg City Council members agreed to accept a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant of $48,059 on behalf of the Bamberg Fire Department during Monday night’s council meeting. The grant will provide funds for a new generator and other equipment.
The fire department is responsible for a 5 percent match, or $2,529, bringing the total of the grant to $50,588. (more…)

FF’s Face Unique Challenges in Hartsville
HARTSVILLE — Whether it was fighting fire, smoldering debris, smoke, water runoff or even unsuspecting motorists, emergency responders in Hartsville faced one challenge after another Monday and Tuesday, and officials say they aren’t out of the woods just yet.
But thanks to the work of more than 150 personnel from local, county and state agencies, the fallout from Monday’s fire at the Hartsville Rainbow Operation plant, which employs about 60 people, could have been a lot worse. (more…)

Fire Victim Suspected of Starting Separate Fire
SEABROOK — A 41-year-old Aiken County man found dead Sunday in a Seabrook home destroyed by fire is suspected of starting a fire that morning at the Aiken home of his estranged wife, according to an Aiken County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Investigators believe Joe Travis Pryor set fire to Amy Pryor’s home in Aiken at about 10 a.m., according to Aiken County sheriff’s Capt. Troy Elwell. (more…)

Hanahan Bar Fire is Arson
HANAHAN – Police have arrested a 21-year-old man they say is responsible for starting a fire at nightclub off Remount Road Sunday morning. According to Hanahan police, Byron Moises Milian Ramirez of Goose Creek was arrested Sunday afternoon and charged with Second Degree Arson. (more…)
Hartsville Warehouse Fire Update
HARTSVILLE – As the sun rose Tuesday morning, smoke billowed from what little remains of the Hartsville Rainbow Operations Plant. Firefighters from at least three counties and close to a dozen departments battled the fertilizer plant fire — including explosions — that began shortly before 7 p.m. Monday.
The plant, also known as the Royster-Clark plant, is part of agricultural services conglomerate Agrium, manufactures Rainbow NPK fertilizer and is capable of making up to 78,400 tons of fertilizer a year, according to the company’s website. (more…)
Fire Destroys 2 Condo’s
GREER - Firefighters will return to the scene of a fire Tuesday that destroyed two condos. That fire started around 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Sugar Creek Villas on Tanager Circle near Enoree Road in Greer. It’s a townhome and condominium complex. A woman says she couldn’t wait for firefighters as flames burned near her home, so she reached for her water hose. (more…)
Major Fire Destroys Fertilizer Warehouse
HARTSVILLE – A MAJOR fire is burning in Hartsville at this time. The Rainbow Farms Service Facility, a fertilizer warehouse, is fully involved. The building is multiple acres in size and loaded with material. The fire plume has started many other fires in its path. Hartsville units are also on scene of a fully involved building on H Street at this time. This is a 5th alarm fire at this time.
