LAKE CITY — Lake City Fire Chief Tony Singletary, remembered as a hard-working individual who loved Lake City and helping others, died Monday at age 52 after a sudden illness. Chief Eulogized as “Man of Urgency”
LAKE CITY — A local minister said Lake City Fire Chief Tony Singletary was always on the move working for God. The Rev. Sinclair C. Frasier, pastor of Greater St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, said Singletary was a man of “urgency.” Singletary was a member of Greater St. James AME Church. “He couldn’t slow down if he wanted to,” Frasier said in his eulogy. “He was only doing his Father’s business.”(more…)

One Taken To Hospital Following House Fire
SOCASTEE — One person was transported to an area hospital after a house caught fire in Socastee Monday afternoon. Horry County Fire Rescue Spokesperson Leslie Yancey said nine units, including some from the Myrtle Beach Fire Dept., worked to extinguish the fire at 4110 Socastee Boulevard. (more…)

Brush Fires Keep FF’s Busy
CONWAY — Brush fires across Horry County kept firefighters busy Monday afternoon as windy weather added to difficult conditions. Horry County Fire Rescue and Conway firefighters responded to a fire off Hwy 905 in the Shell Community around 1:30 p.m. One wooden structure, 9 cars and 2 boats caught fire in this blaze. Alcohol Involved in Fiery Crash
GREENVILLE — Highway Patrol troopers said Sunday morning they arrested a man after he crashed his car into a tree and caused a fire that spread into a nearby wooded area in Greenville. Fire Depts Awarded Grants
ORANGEBURG COUNTY — Area fire departments have been awarded U.S. Department of Homeland Security grants, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham announced Friday.
The Springfield Fire Department will receive a $160,719 operations and safety grant toward the purchase of bunker gear, air packs, auto extrication equipment, a compressor and radios. (more…)

Fire Reported at Local Middle School
CONWAY — An air handler at Conway Middle School caught fire early Monday and caused some minor damage, according to authorities. Firefighters were called about 10 a.m. today to the school located at 1104 Elm St., and found an air handler on the roof above the cafeteria with a small fire inside it, Conway Fire Rescue Capt. FF’s Learn About Dangers of Meth Labs
SANDY RUN — Officers with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office briefed members of the Calhoun County Firefighters Association on recent changes in the way meth labs are being operated in the area. Resort Fights Future Fires
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Nearly two years after a wildfire devastated the neighborhood, the S.C. Forestry Commission has rewarded the efforts of Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach to make itself less vulnerable to future blazes.
The Highway 31 fire in April 2009 burned more than 19,000 acres, destroyed 76 houses, damaged 97 additional homes and caused more than $25 million in damage. The Barefoot Resort community, which was hit hardest by the fire, has since begun the process of becoming a Firewise community, and the Forestry Commission recognized that work Friday with a check for $29,475. SLED: Fire Official Faces Sex Charge
GREENWOOD COUNTY — A 39-year-old Greenwood County fire official is accused of having sex with an unconscious woman he was supposed to be helping during the big winter storm in January. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigators said that on Jan. 11, Greenwood County Fire Coordinator Corey Randolph Grumelot was taking a 26-year-old woman from Abbeville to Greenwood because of the bad weather. Fires Deemed Suspicious
BLUFFTON — Bluffton police are investigating a Tuesday night fire that destroyed a mobile home on Possum Point Lane near the 200 block of Simmonsville Road, according to a Bluffton Township Fire District spokesman.
A neighbor reported the fire at about 11:30 p.m., Capt. Randy Hunter said.
“We’re not sure how long it was burning before someone called it in,” he said. “It was pretty much destroyed by the time firefighters arrived.” (more…)

Repair Shop Destroyed by Fire
GREER — A Greer business was destroyed by fire Wednesday night. Emergency crews were called to 13835 East Wade Hampton Blvd. at about 7 p.m. Greer Fire Chief Chris Harvey said the fire caused the roof of Gentry’s Repair Shop to collapse. Firefighters had to close the eastbound lanes of Wade Hampton Boulevard for a period, creating a traffic problem. (more…)

Man Dies in Garage Fire
ROCK HILL — Fire investigators have not determined the cause of a Tuesday night fire that claimed the life of a Rock Hill man. James Burdette, 50, died of smoke inhalation, according to preliminary autopsy results, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast. Burdette lived at the residence near the detached garage on Finley Road. FD Gets Lower ISO Rating
CHESTER — The Lewis Fire Department has received a lower ISO rating which in turn will help lower homeowners’ insurance rates beginning May 1, said Fire Chief Robbie Huey. An analysis of the Lewis structural fire suppression delivery system resulted in a Public Protection Classification 6 rating, Huey said. The fire department’s current rating is class 9. (more…)

Volunteer Department Swears in New FF’s
LAKE WYLIE — A growing Bethel Volunteer Fire Department swore in its latest round of officers Thursday night for what it hopes will be another banner year for local fire protection.
Included were Chief Don Love; Assistant Chief David Long; Capt. Chris Hybarger; Lts. Scott Boyd, Albert Krashner and Gene Baird; Secretary Lewis Quinn; Treasurer Joe Costello; Training Officer Scott Boyd; and board of directors members Bill Johnston, Josh Solomon, Jonathan Armstrong and Jim Farrant. Funeral Services Set for Fire Chief
LAKE CITY — Monday afternoon, Lake City Fire Chief Tony Singletary passed away following a sudden illness. City officials tell us he suffered a brain aneurysm at his home Saturday morning. He died Monday afternoon at McLeod hospital in Florence. His funeral will be held at the Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church Conference Center (Robinson Memorial Center) at 11:00 a.m. Friday. County’s Proposal Could Cost Lives
ORANGEBURG COUNTY — Orangeburg County fire officials say a plan to make firefighters the first responders to accidents where people are trapped in vehicles could cost lives. Sheriff’s Office Seeking Suspected Arsonist
BERKELEY COUNTY — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help in locating a man suspected of setting fire to a house in Ridgeville last month. Arrests warrants have been issued charging Richard Marquell Johnson, 26, of 1479 Old Gilliard Road with third-degree arson and malicious damage to property, said sheriff’s spokesman Dan Moon. (more…)

Oven Fire Closes Hardees
COLUMBIA — A predawn electrical fire early this morning caused some $200,000 worth of damage to a Hardee’s in the north Columbia area.
“There were three workers inside, but nobody was injured,” said Columbia Fire Department Chief Aubrey Jenkins.

Chicken Farm Fire
WEST COLUMBIA — A hazardous materials team helped contain a fire at a chicken farm in West Columbia Tuesday afternoon. West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall said firefighters are still battling a fire in one building at the Columbia Farms Poultry Plant. Cause of Fire Under Investigation
LEXINGTON COUNTY — Fire destroyed a house at 3094 Fish Hatchery Road in the Pine Ridge community of Lexington County early Wednesday morning.
The fire caused about $88,000 in damage, the Lexington County Fire Service said. A gas line that ruptured and ignited hampered firefighters in their efforts to bring the fire under control. (more…)

Outbuilding at Sawmill Burns
PICKENS — An outbuilding at a Pickens sawmill burned Wednesday night but workers were back on the job this morning. The fire at Durham’s Hardwoods, on Looper Lane in Pickens, was reported just before 10 p.m. Wednesday. Fire Destroys Auto Body Shop
HORRY COUNTY — A fire Wednesday afternoon destroyed an auto body shop on Highway 471 in the Conway area, but injured no one, according to Horry County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Leslie Yancey.
