Woman Rescued From Burning Home

ANDERSON – Firefighters rescued a 90-year-old woman when her Anderson home caught fire Saturday morning. In Belton, another woman's home was damaged by fire as well Saturday. City of Anderson firefighters were called at 5 a.m. to a fire at 605 Westview Ave., according to a fire department statement. (more…)

Major Wildland Fire Rips Through Awendaw

AWENDAW – A very large Wildland fire is burning its way through Northern Charleston County and into Georgetown County this afternoon. 1100+ acres are currently burning or have been destroyed along with reports of between 10 and 20 structures.

Grant Allows EMS To Evaluate Heart Problems

WILLIAMSTON — Williamston EMS has recently been awarded a 2010 Assistance to Firefighter Grant for $191,750 which will be used to purchase the most up to date equipment with technology for evaluating heart patients on site.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) oversees the Assistance to Firefighter Grant each year. The grant is a competitive process where fire departments and non-profit, non-hospital based emergency medical services can seek funding for equipment and vehicles. (more…)

Fire Chief’s Home Burns

WATERLOO — The home of the Waterloo fire chief caught fire early Wednesday morning in Laurens County. The home is on Saluda River Circle near Lake Greenwood.

The chief said he smelled smoke and ran into the laundry room and saw the fire. He said he tried to use a fire extinguisher and water hose to put the fire out, but realized it was spreading quickly. (more…)

House Fire Sends Two To Hospital

LEXINGTON COUNTY — A child playing with a cigarette lighter caused a late afternoon house fire Tuesday in the Pine Grove community of Lexington County, fire officials said.

When firefighters arrived at the house on the 100 block of El Monte Circle, they found an upstairs bedroom in flames. Even though everyone at home at the time of the fire got out, two people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation: a child who lived at the house and a neighbor who responded to cries for help. CHARLESTON – The final report on 2007’s Sofa Super Store fire has been released by a federal agency that used computer simulations to determine how the blaze spread through the massive furniture outlet, killing nine Charleston firefighters.

Fire Causes $170k Damage to Turkey Farm

SANTUC – Nine fire departments from two counties were required to extinguish a blaze that destroyed a 500-foot turkey barn and prevent the flames from engulfing adjacent buildings. Firefighters were first dispatched to 309 Strother Road off SC 215 in the Santuc community just after 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and would remain on the scene until just before 8 p.m. (more…)

Govan Goes From ISO Class 10 to 4

GOVAN – The Govan Fire Department has dramatically reduced its Insurance Services Organization rating, which will lead to better fire protection and lower insurance costs for residents, the fire chief says. The ISO’s Public Protection Classification rating improved from the worst rating of Class 10 to a Class 4 recently, according to Govan Fire Chief Mike Epperson. Int’l Auto Extrication Competition Coming to SC

MYRTLE BEACH — The International Auto Extrication Competition (NAVRC) will be held this year, June 8-10, 2011 in Myrtle Beach, SC. This is the 27th annual NAVRC and the first in South Carolina. Old Schoolhouse Destroyed in Fire

AYNOR —  Crews with Horry County Fire Rescue worked to put out a fire at an old schoolhouse in Aynor Thursday evening. The emergency call was made about 4:45 p.m. Thursday to a home at St. John Road and Pee Dee Road. Horry County Spokesperson Leslie Yancey said the building was once a schoolhouse, but was converted into four apartments. (more…)

Chief Pleads for Burning Ordinance

DARLINGTON — Darlington County Council has voted to move forward with a proposed open burning ordinance when the state Forestry Commission issues a red flag alert.

David L. Williamson, chief of the Darlington County Fire District, appeared before council to discuss the need for such an ordinance Monday night during its regular meeting.

Williams alluded to a brush fire off Turnpike Road in Darlington County that burned 65 acres and was buffeted by 35 mph winds. (more…)

Man Uses Cell Phone to Call For Help from Island

COLUMBIA — A man who got stuck on an island in the Broad River is safe Monday evening after he called rescue crews from his cell phone for help.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said the man called rescue crews Monday afternoon to say he was stuck on the Broad River. Crews responded to the River Drive Bridge where Broad River Road crosses the river. (more…)

Woman Injured in Fire

ANDERSON — A woman was injured Friday night when a small apartment building in Anderson caught fire.

The fire started sometime around 7:30 p.m., and damaged at least one apartment in the building on Bowen Street. The cause of the fire was not clear. (more…)

Business Damaged by Fire

LAKE CITY — Fire damaged some of the motors and a fishing boat stored inside one of the buildings at Lake City Electric Motor Repair Inc. on Sunday night. The fire occurred in a metal building that was the business’ newest addition, but Operations Manager David Cook was looking on the bright side. (more…)

Crews Battle 2 Alarm Fire

HORRY COUNTY — A fire at an Horry County apartment complex is under investigation after crews were called early Friday for the blaze, said Leslie Yancey, public information officer for Horry County Fire Rescue.

The fire was reported at 2:08 a.m. today at Coastal Villas Apartment located at 3555 S.C. 544, Yancey said.Flames were showing when firefighters arrived.

A second alarm was called because firefighters wanted more equipment and manpower at the scene in case the fire spread to an adjacent building, Yancey said. (more…)

Two Rescued from Collapsed Building

GREENVILLE — Emergency workers say they have rescued two construction workers who were trapped in a collapsed free-standing garage this afternoon south of Lake Cunningham.

One of the two was airlifted to Greenville Hospital System while a second was transported by ambulance, Lake Cunningham Fire District Capt. Bryan Bailey said. (more…)

FD Dedicates New Fire Engine

NORTH CHARLESTON — The North Charleston Fire Department got a new truck on Tuesday and dedicated it to a fallen firefighter. Officials gave Engine 203 the traditional wet-down welcoming and dedicated the truck in honor of Walter Bryant “Buzz” Varella and his family. (more…)

Home Destroyed by Fire

ROCK HILL — Authorities are investigating a fire this morning that completely destroyed a Rock Hill residence.

Deputies were called to the unoccupied Whisonant Road residence before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to investigate a house fire, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report.

A firefighter with Bethesda Fire Department was told someone saw a white van in the area of the house around the time the fire started. (more…)

Sprinkler Assists in Nursing Home Fire

MYRTLE BEACH — Firefighters from Horry County Fire Rescue responded to a fire Tuesday morning at the Brightwater Skilled Nursing Facility, in Myrtle Beach.

Crews were called out at 2:39 a.m. to a fire that began in the laundry room area of the nursing home.

The sprinkler system inside the nursing home was able to contain the fire until crews could get there. (more…)

Boarding House Fire Leaves 33 Homeless

GAFFNEY — When Cherokee County deputies Nick Federico and Benji Peterson pulled up to the Cherokee Avenue boarding house Wednesday morning, residents were climbing down sheets to escape the flames upstairs. The deputies, who had just reported to work for first shift, heard the call on their scanners and went to the scene, where they discovered “chaos” and “people running everywhere.” (more…)

Mobile Home Damaged by Fire

NORTH CHARLESTON — The North Charleston Fire Department is investigating what caused a mobile home fire Monday. The fire started around 1:30 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Dalton Street, just off Rivers Avenue. A police officer on patrol reported the fire to the dispatch center.
