ANDERSON COUNTY – A fire claimed two houseboats Wednesday at Portman Shoals Marina on Hartwell Lake in Anderson County. No one was injured. The boats, each at least 50 feet long, were destroyed. Challenging Week For County Emergency Services
DORCHESTER COUNTY — Last week was certainly one of the busier weeks for fires — especially wildfires – the lowcountry has seen in some time.
For many Dorchester County emergency services, Thursday, March 24 may have been one of the busiest days in recent history.
By now, the public knows about the wildfire in upper Dorchester County that started Thursday morning and burned more than 1,200 acres near the Sandridge Community. In fact, a 69-year-old Dorchester man, Raymond Nelson has been cited in connection with that fire by the S.C. Forestry Commission for allowing a fire to spread to another’s property, a misdemeanor, according to SC Forestry Commission officials. (more…)

FD Cuts Overtime Amid Budget Concerns
HORRY COUNTY — With over 200 firefighters on staff, Chief Garry Alderman is ordering his team to cut out overtime to help save money inside his public safety department.
In an email to Horry County Fire Rescue workers, Chief Alderman stressed the need to cut down on extra hours as a way to prepare for even more budget cuts in the next fiscal year.
"As most of you know the whole country is in economical constraints. When I say this, I know that effects most of us in Fire Rescue." said the memo released on Friday by officials within the department. (more…)
Official Suggests Combining FDs
ORANGEBURG COUNTY – Orangeburg County's top fire official is suggesting smaller volunteer fire departments could be combined with larger ones to increase efficiency.
"Smaller areas could actually be combined with other areas to create a larger service area and therefore response would be better," Fire System Coordinator Gene Ball said. No one would lose service. (more…)
Burning SUV Shuts Down Block
COLUMBIA — Flames poured from an SUV on Harden Street in the heart of Columbia's Five Points Wednesday evening. Columbia police and firefighters shut down an entire block around the blaze. A charred metal shell is all that's left of the SUV, and the inside is pretty much destroyed. (more…)

Memorial Work Begins At Sofa Super Store Fire Site
CHARLESTON — As the four-year anniversary of the Sofa Super Store disaster approaches, the city is working to turn the site into a more fitting memorial for the nine Charleston firefighters who died there. Long-term plans for a permanent memorial and fire department building where the Sofa Super Store once stood are unfunded and years away, but in the meantime Charleston will create a grass-covered, landscaped site with unique memorial markers for the nine, replacing what is now a parking lot and field where nine simple markers hold small flags.
