Smoke Detector Saves Family

FLORENCE — A home in the 1100 block of Hollings Avenue was heavily damaged by a fire early Monday morning. At abouty 1 a.m. Monday, Florence Fire Department units were called to a reported structure fire. At the time the fire started there were eight people asleep inside.

The occupants were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors sounding. All of the residents vacated the home safely. (more…)

FF’s Battling Large Brush Fire

CAINHOY — Local firefighters and the South Carolina Forestry Commission are battling a large brush fire near Interstate 526. Nicknamed the Beech Hill Fire by forestry commission officials, the fire began as a controlled burn several weeks ago.

Officials say it reignited. As of Monday morning the fire had not threatened any homes in the area. Officials say the fire area is about 225 acres and moderate fire activity is expected for most of the day. (more…)

FF’s Battle Historic Home Fire Twice

NEWBERRY — Fire crews were called back to a historic home near downtown Newberry early Wednesday morning after a fire from the night before flared up again. Firefighters were first called to the home at 2003 Harper St. around 5:00 p.m. Tuesday after a lightning strike started a fire in the attic.  (more…)

Burn Ban and Red Flag Lifted

CHARLESTON — Fire warnings and burn bans have been lifted across South Carolina. Tuesday's rainfall provided the moisture the area had been missing for much of the summer, and eased the fire danger.

The weather brought a welcomed change to the forecast. It left firefighters relieved to get some help from mother nature. (more…)

Leaders Break Ground on Consolidated Dispatch

NORTH CHARLESTON — Tuesday's rain couldn't stop Charleston County leaders from officially breaking ground on the new 911 Consolidated Dispatch Center.

The facility will be located on 8500 Palmetto Commerce Parkway in North Charleston and will be about 38,000 square feet. It will house most of the Lowcountry's dispatch centers. (more…)

Home Heavily Damaged in Fire

ANDERSON — Bock Crawley woke up from a nap Wednesday afternoon to a kitchen fire that quickly spread through the home where he and several relatives live on the east side of Anderson. “It scared the hell out of me,” said Crawley as he watched 16 city firefighters working to put out the blaze at 805 Beachwood Ave., which is between Jefferson and Dickens avenues off East Orr Street. Suspicious Fire Being Investigated

CHARLESTON — Charleston firefighters are investigating a suspicious fire that damaged a home on Cannon Street early Thursday morning.

The first units to arrive could be heard on their radios reporting the fire burning on the first floor front porch. CFD spokesman Mark Ruppel confirmed that it appears the fire started there, but it's too early to connect it to dozens of suspicious fires on the peninsula over the last eight years. (more…)

Mobile Home Destroyed In Fire

LEXINGTON — Lexington County firefighters responded to a house fire on Wood Drive near West Columbia Tuesday evening. When firefighters arrived around 7:00 p.m., firefighters say the double-wide mobile home was engulfed in flames. No one was home at the time of the fire, and there have been no reported injuries.(more…)

Unclear Addresses Slow Emergency Response

MYRTLE BEACH -– Officials are reminding homeowners that addresses hard to see or missing completely could slow down crews trying to reach a home in an emergency.

The concern comes after the Horry County Police Department says officers initially had trouble finding a home where they say a man murdered his mom Sunday. They said there were no numbers on the home marking the address.  (more…)

Overnight Fire Destroys Lakefront Home

TOWNVILLE — A fire late Tuesday night destroyed a lake-front home under construction in Anderson County.

Firefighters said the house along Point Drive on Lake Hartwell was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Part of the 3,000-square-foot home collapsed, but no one was injured, firefighters said. (more…)

Fire Rating Improvement Helps Homeowners

BRANCHVILLE — When you reach a goal, it's one thing. When you go beyond, well, that ain't too bad either. "I'm extremely proud of the members of the department that spent countless hours preparing for this over the last few years and that it has paid off," Branchville Fire Chief Alan Oakley said.

Fire Leaves 63 People Homeless

SUMTER — 63 people are out of their homes because of a fire in their apartment building, but it wasn't the flames or smoke that caused the most damage – it was water.

Sumter County firefighters were called to the Garden Circle Apartments on East Liberty St. around 1:00 p.m. Saturday for a stove fire in a seventh floor apartment. Firefighters immediately evacuated the building, which houses mostly elderly and physically disabled people. (more…)

Condo Fire Leaves One Injured

MYRTLE BEACH — One person was injured in a fire that broke out Friday evening on the eighth floor of a condo building on 20th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach firefighters were still on the scene at 10 p.m. clearing out smoke from the 72 unit Atlantis building, across from The Breakers resort. Firefighters responded to a fire alarm activation around 8 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from room 802 when they arrived, according to Battalion Chief Tom Gwyer. (more…)

Firefighter Injured in Blaze

WILLIAMSTON — A Sunday afternoon fire ravaged the house that a family of four had left only minutes earlier to go to the zoo and to eat lunch. Firefighters pulled up to 209 Carrageen Drive and saw flames shooting through the roof around 1 p.m., said Whitefield Fire Chief Paul Drake. The address is near Midway Road. (more…)

Man Dies Trying To Steal Copper

COWPENS — A man is dead and about 3,000 people were left without power after a fire at a Duke Energy substation in Spartanburg County. Authorities say the man was killed trying to steal copper from the substation.

Duke Energy said someone broke into the substation near Cowpens around 9:30 p.m. Monday and damaged equipment, which started a fire. (more…)

Smoke From Hornet Fire Indefinite

CONWAY — For two weeks now Wayne Trainor has been doing a lot of looking out his back door at the Hornet Fire, which continues to burn in the woods behind his home in the Hillsborough community off Highway 90 in Horry County.

"As long as the wind's not blowing in our direction we do feel pretty good, but you still have to watch it," Trainor said. Many of his neighbors worry about the fire too. Now some are asking if forestry firefighters are doing enough. (more…)

MARION – A Marion Police Officer on an early morning patrol found heavy smoke coming from a building in downtown Marion. Upon arrival of Marion FF's it was quickly established that a lot of help was going to be needed to battle this massive fire.

Sofa Super Store Case Ends

CHARLESTON — Sofa Super Store and its owners have agreed to pay about $1.9 million to settle claims brought by the families of nine Charleston firefighters who died fighting an inferno at the West Ashley showroom in June 2007, court records show. The action effectively brings to a close the various lawsuits surrounding the deadly fire at the massive Savannah Highway furniture outlet. In all, more than $18 million in settlements were paid out over four years of litigation involving a field of more than two dozen defendants, said Motley Rice attorney Kevin Dean, who represents some of the families who sued. Couple Saved by Smoke Detectors

GALIVANTS FERRY — A couple from Galivants Ferry credit their home’s smoke detectors with helping them escape an early morning fire that destroyed their home.

Kathy Dix, a local insurance agent, woke about 1 a.m. Thursday to the sound of smoke detectors in her home at 1574 Jonestown Road in Galivants Ferry, she said.

Horry County firefighters were called soon after and found flames and fire shooting from the attic of the single family home, said Leslie Yancey, Horry County Fire Rescue spokeswoman. The home was heavily damaged by fire, but no one was hurt during the incident. (more…)

Two Injured in Car Fire

BELTON – A 75-year-old man and his 13-year-old grandson were taken to the hospital Thursday after a barn fire that destroyed several vehicles. Tommy Lowe suffered burns on his hands and arms and his grandson Logan Smith was having problems breathing after inhaling smoke, said Lowe’s wife, Millie. She said her husband and Logan both went by ambulance to AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson. (more…)

Man Dies in Early Morning Fire

SPARTANBURG – A 76-year-old man died early Friday morning after a fire at his Spartanburg home. Bobby Gibson, Sr., of 709 Fairfax Ave., was pronounced dead at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center at 2:45 a.m. The fire was called into dispatchers just before 2 a.m., according to the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office.
