Fire Damages Downtown Newberry Businesses

NEWBERRY – A fire has destroyed at least two businesses on the square in Newberry. The fire broke out after 2 this morning. The fire was spotted by Friendly firefighter who were headed to their station after being called to a barn fire in Bush River. The Gentlemen's Corner and Edwards Jones businesses appears to be totally destroyed by the fire.

Gas and electricity have been shut off to all businesses in the block between College and Caldwell streets at Main Street. Firefighters are working to determine if other businesses have damages. A host of firefighters from around the county were called to the scene. Also the ladder truck owned by the city and county was on the scene and the Joanna Fire Department's large ladder truck was also called in.

Shane Ray Name South Carolina Fire Academy Superintendent

COLUMBIA - Chief Shane Ray was offered and, has accepted, the position of Program Manager II (Superintendent) in the Division of Fire & Life Safety/Office of Fire Academy. His first day will be October 3, 2011. Shane Ray began his fire service career in 1984 and worked through the ranks from firefighter to fire chief of career and volunteer organizations.

Greenville Picks New Fire Chief

GREENVILLE – The city of Greenville hired Stephen J. Kovalcik to replace longtime fire chief Tommy McDowell, who is retiring. Kovalcik is the current fire chief for Sterling Heights, Mich., a Detroit suburb with a population of more than 129,000. Kovalcik has 31 years’ experience as a fire service professional, including management, tactical operations and communication.

13 Year Veteran Columbia Firefighter Charged with Arson

COLUMBIA – A Columbia firefighter has been suspended from the department after being arrested and charged with arson. Columbia-Richland Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said 38-year-old Pierre Daye of Columbia was arrested and charged with third-degree arson for a fire that happened on August 20 at a duplex on Abingdon Rd. in Columbia.

South Lynches Fire Burns Home

 

SOUTH LYNCHES - This house fire came in at 1040hrs this morning after a delayed call resulting in heavy fire showing in thirty percent of the story and one haft  brick veneer  structure.  Engine 311 laid in with a 5” supply line from a hydrant on Morris Street.

Elgin Fire Chief Dennis Cauthen Passes

ELGIN – We regret to inform the Fire Service of South Carolina that Fire Chief Dennis Cauthen of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department died this morning after returning from a house fire in Lancaster. 

Chief Cauthen who had served as a Volunteer Firefighter for more than 30 years, died this morning after a structure fire. He was 54 years-of-age.

While enroute to the fire early this morning Chief Cauthen began complaining of stomach pains. He remained at the fire for three hours. After the fire at around 6am, Chief Cauthen reportedly passed out and died.

Crane Overturns Injuring Construction Worker

SPARTANBURG - Poole and another witness said the man, who was not identified, plunged about 15 feet from the seat of the crane into an 8-foot-deep hole. Construction workers were at Cornerstone Baptist Church Tuesday to install a vault that will supply water to the church sprinkler system. The church is undergoing an expansion. (more…)

White Knoll Students’ Generosity Still Shines 10 Years Later

LEXINGTON COUNTY - A small but significant chunk of American history sits in a display case in the front lobby of White Knoll Middle School in rural Lexington County: A battered section of sheet metal bearing the words “Red Hook Raiders.” The piece is from the door of a Fire Department of New York ladder truck that was crushed at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001. All seven firefighters that manned her — from a station in the blue-collar Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn — were killed when Tower One collapsed after the terrorist attacks. (more…)
