Woman Charged with Setting House on Fire

ROCK HILL — A Rock Hill woman faces arson charges after investigators say she burned down her own home in attempts to defraud an insurance company. Stacy Sindell, 37, was charged Tuesday with two counts of arson and two counts of burning personal property to defraud insurer, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office. She’s accused of setting a house fire that caused $300,000 in damages to a Rock Hill home on Sept. 11. (more…)

County Considers Trimming Fire-Rescue Budget

Volunteer Vs. Career.. Response Time

HORRY COUNTY — Fire Rescue Chief Garry Alderman can sum up the difference between response times across the county in a very simple way: The five fastest times come from stations manned by career firefighters in the eastern, more urban, portion of the county and the five slowest come from volunteer stations in the county’s rural, western part.

In 2010, Horry County Fire Rescue’s roughly 30 fire engines had an average response time of 13.76 minutes, according to department statistics. Engine seven, east of the S.C. 90 corridor, had the fastest average of 7.32 minutes.  (more…)

Woman Thrown More Than 100 Feet in Accident

IVA — A young woman was thrown more than 100 feet from her car in an accident Thursday night on S.C. 81 about a mile south of Iva, officials said.

The woman, identified by the S.C. Highway Patrol as Robyn Griffin, 28, of Abbeville, was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital after the one-car wreck, which happened shortly after 6 p.m.  (more…)

Two Drivers Hurt in Wreck

ANDERSON — Anderson Fire Department Chief Dale Horne had blood spots on the front of his shirt after helping extract a driver following a Thursday afternoon wreck. Christopher Black, 30, was headed toward Anderson on East River Street near the S.C. 29 Bypass when he hit a median, said Tony Tilley, spokesman for the Anderson Police Department. (more…)

Fire Damage Estimated in Millions

HOLLY HILL — The cause of a blaze at a Holly Hill business is still undetermined, Orangeburg County Fire Service Chief Operations Officer Teddy Wolfe said Thursday. "There are still too many possibilities that we are looking at right now," Wolfe said. Departments from across Orangeburg County joined firefighters from Berkeley, Charleston and Colleton counties to extinguish the conflagration Wednesday at Don's Car Crushing on White Sands Road. Firefighter Injured in Blaze

Heroic Actions Save Man From Fiery Wreck

ROUND O — Johnny Byrd pulled up to the rural Colleton County yard and shined his headlights into the pitch-black night to see if a thunderous "streak of light" his daughter had seen minutes before was indeed a wreck. It took a moment, but the 48-year-old pastor soon realized his lights were reflecting off the bottom of a car resting on its passenger side. (more…)

Fire Destroys 100-year-old Building

LAMAR – A fire that engulfed Lamar Hardware and Lumber early Wednesday morning has left the more than 100-year-old building in ruins. Lamar Police Chief Charles Woodle said the fire began just after midnight and quickly enveloped the building. Flames shooting through the roof and smoke billowing into the air could be seen for miles, said Desi Conrad of Lamar who witnessed the fire. The century-old landmark was built in the late 1800s as an old train depot. (more…)

Chief Marc Melfi to Retire From Summerville Fire Department

SUMMERVILLE – Come November, Summerville Fire Chief Marc Melfi will no longer have to jump when the alarm bells ring and the trucks roar out of the station. Melfi, who started with the Summerville Fire Department in 1982 and rose through the ranks to become its Chief in 2006, will retire from the department effective Nov. 18. (more…)
