BLUFFTON – A former Bluffton Township Fire District captain accused of burning down his Okatie home in 2008 will appeal a state agency's decision denying him renewal of his EMT certification. Robert James Pairman, 47, and his ex-wife, Kelly Nestor Pairman, 42, face charges of second-degree arson and animal mistreatment after allegedly setting their Rivers End home on fire. (more…)

City List Omits 2 Possible Arsons
CHARLESTON – At 5:45 a.m. on June 30, 2004, someone climbed the metal stairs at 34 Morris St. and started a fire next to a car battery. Despite similarities to other fires in the neighborhood, this incident wasn't included in a roster of suspicious fires the city released during the summer. (more…)

Tanker Carrying Acid Overturns in Spartanburg
SPARTANBURG – A tractor trailer tank truck has overturned at Union Street and Cedar Branch Road. The tanker was carrying a sodium hydroxide solution at the time of the accident.
Spartanburg Firefighters report that only fuel from the saddle tanks is leaking at the moment.
The driver was extricated by Firefighters just after the incodent occurred a little before 7:30 this monring.
Spartanburg County HAZMAT is on scene along with Spartanburg PSD, and Croft FD. DHEC is also on scene to evaluate the situtation. Another truck is being brought in to assist in the pumping off of the prdouct.

Fire Claims New Hidden Hill Baptist Church
SPARTANBURG – The Rev. Antonio Lee preached a sermon on Sunday morning he called, “Preserve me till the day comes. Lord keep us safe.” On Sunday night, he watched in shock with other New Hidden Hill Baptist Church members as their church was destroyed by fire. (more…)

Georgetown Buildings Remain Closed Because of Sinkhole
GEORGETOWN – The sinkhole problems continue in Georgetown. More than three days after the collapse of the Parrish Place retail building, more structural problems are showing up in other buildings nearby. Employees at Coastal Staffing Services on Dozier Street right behind the collapsed building, started noticing changes in their office Monday. (more…)
Firefighters, Civic Leaders Propose 9/11 Memorial to Oconee School Board
WALHALLA – A group of Oconee County firefighters and civic leaders want to make sure the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America are not forgotten. The group asked the School District of Oconee County Board of Trustees at a meeting this week for permission and space to erect a 9/11 memorial on the property of the new Walhalla High School that is to be constructed on S.C. 11 North. Fire Chief Roy Hill Laid to Rest
SOCIETY HILL – Longtime Society Hill Rural Fire Chief Leslie Leroy “Roy” Hill was ferried to rest Monday in the town’s restored 1956 Ford F-600 fire truck. Hill’s funeral was at historic Welsh Neck Baptist Church. He was interred in the church cemetery. (more…)
Upstate Firefighters Mutual Aid with Polk County, NC on Mutli-Alarm Blaze
POLK COUNTY, NC – Firefighters from Polk County and Spartanburg County, South Carolina battled a fire in the club house of the Red Fox Country Club Monday morning.
Heavy fire conditions were seen throughout the one-story brick building. The structure was reported to be empty at the time of the fire.
Troopers: EMS Worker Removed Pot From Accident Scene
MONCKS CORNER – A paramedic who allegedly took marijuana from a felony DUI suspect at a crash scene and tried to hide it from law enforcement was charged Friday with obstruction of justice. Chelsea Arrowood, 27, of Summerville, a paramedic for Berkeley County EMS, was arrested by the S.C. Highway Patrol, Cpl. Bob Beres said. (more…)

Holly Springs Fire District Audit Reveals Possible Conflict
HOLLY SPRINGS – Findings from the Holly Springs Fire and Rescue District’s annual audit reveal a possible conflict with the terms of a 2008 FEMA grant used to pay for a new brush truck. The audit findings were announced during a short Wednesday afternoon meeting of the district’s outgoing commissioners, each of whom sought re-election, were defeated in the Nov. 8 election. (more…)

UPDATE: 3 NOW CONFIRMED FATAL; ONE MISSING
YORK COUNTY – A massive line of severe weather created several tornado's that touched down in South and North Carolina. At least three people have been killed and up to five or more are still missing.
One tornado touched down in Chester County (photo above) causing significant damage to cars, trees, and mobile homes.
Another storm cell moved through York County in the area of Rock Hill killing at least three people. The area of devestation is near Williamson Road and Highway 324.
One mobile home was thrown 100+ yards as well as several cars tossed onto their roofs.

5K Run Honors Fallen Columbia Firefighter
COLUMBIA – The Columbia Fire Department and Irmo Fire District hosted the first annual "Gone, But Not Forgotten" 5K run and walk Sunday to honor a firefighter killed in the line of duty late last year. Firefighter Chance Zobel died on Nov. 13, 2010 when he was hit by a car while responding to a brush fire alongside Interstate 20 near Clemson Road. (more…)

ORANGEBURG – The fires have returned. Firefighters responded to three blazes at vacant and powerless houses in the Stilton Road area on Monday. Last week, there were three more fires at two Jamison Avenue houses, for a total of six in the area. (more…)

HOLLY SPRINGS – Voters served by the Holly Springs Fire and Rescue District delivered a clear message of change Tuesday. Unofficial election results showed that five new commissioners are headed into office by significant vote margins. Tuesday marked the first time voters had been able to choose their commissioners. EMS Employee Accused of Taking Marijuana from Wreck Scene

Firefighters Face Off in Grueling Challenge in Myrtle Beach
MYRTLE BEACH – More than 1,000 firefighters from eight countries will compete beginning Monday in the Scott World Firefighter Combat Challenge in Myrtle Beach. It is the second time the event, known as the “toughest two minutes in sports,” has been held in Myrtle Beach, said Leslie Yancey, public information officer for Horry County Fire Rescue. (more…)

HORRY COUNTY – 3 house fires that killed 3 Horry County people in less than 2 weeks have been ruled accidental. The most recent death occurred early Thursday when Brenda Casey, 49, died in her home located at 3017 Shetland Lane, which is located off U.S. 17 Bypass near the Myrtle Beach International Airport, Horry County Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said. St. Andrews FF’s Work Horrific MVA
CHARLESTON – St. Andrews Bravest worked a horrific wreck on Savannah Hwy near Main Rd this morning. A man driving a late model Toyota slammed into the back of a tractor trailer that had slowed down to make a left turn.
It is unknown why the driver failed to see the large truck until it was too late. St. Andrews Fire Departments extrication process was made more difficult due to the car being tightly wedged underneath the rear of the trailer.
The driver was extricated and flown via CHARLESTON-7 to the MUSC Trauma Center. It is unknown as to the extent of his injuries at press time.

A TRUE Fire Service Legend has passed away. Hal Bruno died last night at the age of 83. Dave Statter, of www.statter911.com, has written a wonderful article on Mr. Bruno. As I used to say in the station… "nuff said"
Large Fire Fought in Kingstree
KINGSTREE – At approximately 2 AM on Sunday, November 6, the Kingstree Fire Department responded to a structure fire call on Main Street, Kingstree. When firefighters arrived, at Miracles on Main, formerly the C. Tucker building, they reported heavy smoke conditions coming from the attic area of the building.

Arson in the Holy City
CHARLESTON – A serial arsonist has been traveling the streets of the Holy City since 2002 setting ablaze more than 80 structures. Most have been vacant but the trend is now moving towards occupied buildings. Some of the signatures are the setting of the porch alight with available materials at the scene as well as performing the acts early in the morning.
The latest in suspicious fires occurred last night at Montagu near Ashley Avenue. It too started on the porch as well as early in the morning hours at around 3:45. We will have more information as it becomes available. Meanwhile look through the Post and Couriers Special Report on "Tracking an Arsonist".
