Massive Fire Destroys Jasper County Building

HARDEEVILLE – Firefighters were busy this morning battling a massive blaze on Speedway Blvd near I-95. The fire destroyed five businesses and a Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist Church in Jasper County. The fire started around 3am and reported to have started in a burglarized business in an apparent attempt to cover up the crime.

The fire quickly spread to the attic and ran the length of the building. The lack of fire breaks and sprinklers hastened the advance of the blaze. Multiple fire departments were called into assist. Crews were on scene for nearly 10 hours.

Arson squads are on scene investigation the incident.

Richland County K9 Deputy “Fargo” Killed in the Line of Duty

COLUMBIA – A Richland County K9 Deputy shot multiple times by a robbery suspect this morning has died. K9 Deputy "Fargo" was attempting to apprehend a robbery suspect during a chase on Monticello Road. Fargo's Handler Deputy Warren Cavanagh was also injured during the chase. A massive manhunt is underway for a black man, about 5'8" tall, with a mustache, wearing a camoflage jacket, blue jeans, and a black shirt.

During chasing the suspect K9 Fargo caught up with the suspect and locked on to him. During the struggle the suspect shot Fargo 3 times afterwhich he fired shots at deputies. The deputies returned fire and it is unknown if the suspect was struck.

K9 Fargo, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois who was trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and criminal apprehension, died in surgery.

Police officers from multiple agencies are searching for the suspect at press time. Two helicopters from two counties are being used as well.

From the Richland County Sheriffs Office K9 webpage: Master Deputy Cavanagh came to RCSD in 2006 from the office of Inspector General with the State of South Carolina DJJ. He has been in Law Enforcement since 2002 and began handling K9s in late 2004. M/D Cavanagh’s partner is K-9 Fargo. K-9 Fargo is a Belgian Malinois acquired by RCSD in 2006 at the early age of 9 months to begin his training. K-9 Fargo is triple wielded in Narcotics detection, Tracking, and Criminal Apprehension. M/D Cavanagh and K9 Fargo pride themselves in making the communities of Richland County a safe place to live.

The Same Mistakes

Four years after nine firefighters died battling Sofa Super Store fire, a report details an eerily similar set of breakdowns in a March blaze.

CHARLESTON – Firefighters rush into a burning commercial building with too-small hoses and insufficient water. The commander can’t reach them because the captain forgot his radio. Backup crews aren’t sure where to go or what to do. Confusion reigns as the building’s truss roof collapses in an explosion of flames. This reads like the playbook from the deadly Sofa Super Store fire in June 2007, but it’s not… (more…)
