COTTAGEVILLE – Colleton County Fire Rescue crews battled a blaze at 125 Dodge Lane,just south of Cottageville. The large double wide mobile home was located in a remote area and down a long dirt road. The people were not at home when the fire started. When they returned home they found the home heavily involved.
Engine 9 arrived about 9 minutes after it was dispatched and reported the large doublewide mobile home was approximately 75% involved. Firefighters deployed one 2-1/2 and two 1-3/4 handlines to combat the fire. There was a dry hydrant in a pond in front of this house, which was used for water supply. Firefighters worked for about 30 minutes to control the fire and were on the scene for over four hours. The Charleston Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
The preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in the area of a space heater in a bed room. The family lost all of their belongings.
Engine 2, Engine 9, Engine 902, Tender 2, Tender 6, Tender 9, Tender 905, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 6, Medic 9, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Captain Dewayne Jacques served as Incident Commander.
