SLED Investigating Missing Money at FD

FLORENCE – South Carolina's State Law Enforcement Division Tuesday announced it is conducting an investigation into missing money at Howe Springs Fire Department.  SLED spokesperson Kathryn Richardson said the investigation was launched April 13 but wouldn't say how much money was at issue in the investigation.  (more…)

Townhouses Destroyed in Fire

BLUFFTON – A fire that broke out at townhouses at about 3 p.m Tuesday in Oldfield Mews in Bluffton severely damaged one of them.  Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 40 minutes, according to the Bluffton Township Fire District. Of the six adjoining townhouses, the middle unit was heavily damaged, Capt. Island Fire Destroys Home

DEWEES ISLAND – Fire leveled two homes and damaged at least two more on this tiny island community Tuesday night.  The fire was first reported about 9 p.m. and was extinguished within a couple of hours with the help of fire crews that arrived by boat. There is no bridge to the island.  (more…)

Adults, Children Injured in MVA

GREER – Five people were sent to local hospitals after a two-vehicle crash in Greer on Monday night. A Ford pick-up truck and a Chevrolet Tahoe collided near the intersection of J. Verne Smith Highway and Victor Mill Road about 7 p.m. The Tahoe overturned onto its roof, ejecting two people inside, Greer Fire Chief Chris Harvey said.  (more…)

Training Enters Online World

HORRY COUNTY – Horry County is among two counties in the state to implement an online blended training program for its firefighters that gives new recruits more flexibility when studying to become certified.  On Friday, the next recruit class that includes 21 career and 24 volunteers will graduate as certified firefighters for Horry County Fire Rescue.  (more…)

FF’s Shave Heads in Support

MT PLEASANT – Nearly every member of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department stood side-by-side Saturday morning. It was picture day. Seventy-five firemen stood in front of cameras, striking a pose with their new hairdos. The new cuts meant more to Lt. Interim Chief Promises Change

MYRTLE BEACH – From his hospital bed at the age of 6, Kenneth Beans could see a nearby fire station and spent his time recovering from surgery and undergoing radiation for a cancerous tumor by watching the fire engines leave and come back from calls. Now, 52 years later, Beans is the interim chief for Horry County Fire Rescue and hopes to be given the opportunity to lead the department until his retirement in another five years or so.  “I’m going to do the best job I can honestly do,” said Beans, a West Chester, Pa., native. “I hope to bring a higher level of professionalism to this organization.”  (more…)

Miscommunication Leads to Medical Response Delay

SUMMERVILLE – We have new information on a toddler who drowned in Summerville. Charleston County says miscommunication led to a delay in crews getting to an emergency scene.  A neighbor from the Summer Park subdivision called 911 last Friday when 2-year-old Sia Jarvis was found in a retention pond. Dorchester County EMS was already on the way to the hospital with the girl before Charleston County, the agency in charge of responding, even arrived.  (more…)

Teens Killed in Accident

BEAUFORT – Two Beaufort High School students were killed in a single-car accident Saturday night.  Officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol say a 2009 Mitsubishi Sedan was traveling on Seaside Road when the 18-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle and the car went off the road, overturned and struck a tree.  Both the driver and the teen riding in the passenger's seat died at the scene of the accident officials say happened at about 7:44 p.m.  (more…)

Fire Chief Makes “Wall of Fame”

COLUMBIA – Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins has been put on the Columbia Housing Authority's Wall of Fame.  The group honors people who have at one time received housing assistance.  Jenkins stayed in Saxon Homes for eight years. He has worked with City of Columbia for over 30 years, and was named fire chief in July of last year.  (more…)

Fundraiser to Support FF’s Sick Child

ANDERSON – Whitefield volunteer firefighters are rallying with a Saturday fundraiser to help a sick child of a firefighter. Erik Aiken has been a firefighter there for years and his team is now pushing for help for his 5-year-old daughter, Maranda Aiken, who suffers from uncontrollable seizures. Maranda has been treated with many medications that did not relieve the symptoms and she regularly undergoes testing at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.  (more…)

Former FF Files Federal Lawsuit; Fire Chief Reassigned

HORRY COUNTY – A former Horry County firefighter has filed a federal lawsuit alleging racial discrimination, according to court records.  The suit was filed April 10, three days before Horry County announced the reassignment of Fire Chief Garry Alderman, who will become Horry County Fire-Rescue's director of support services effective April 16.  (more…)

Rescuers Free Trapped Horses at Wreck Scene

YEMASSEE – A semi hauling six horses in a trailer overturned on the shoulder of Interstate 95 Wednesday night, trapping the animals inside as rescuers worked to free them in a downpour.  Colleton County Fire and Rescue members freed five of the horses through holes they cut in the top of the enclosed trailer. A sixth horse had to be euthanized because of the severity of its injuries, Director Barry McRoy said.  (more…)

“Peanut Man” Loses Equipment in Fire

CHARLESTON – Tony the Peanut Man had just taken a break from boiling his trademark legumes when a loud knock sounded on the front door of his West Ashley home early Tuesday. “There’s a fire in your backyard,” a breathless neighbor told him.  Tony, also known as Anthony Wright, ran barefoot from his 5th Avenue home, ignoring the sting of gravel on his feet as he rounded the corner.   (more..)

Fire Destroys Home

TIGERVILLE – A Tigerville family was left in the rain Tuesday night after a fire damaged their home in Greenville County.  Tigerville firefighters said they arrived about 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sweet Gum Valley Road home to find half of the roof engulfed in flames. Neighbors called 911 when they saw fire, but thankfully the family was not home at the time. (more…)

Old Fire Truck Has New Important Mission

SUMMERVILLE – They swarmed over the great machine, scraping, sweeping, gently removing old paint, old decals, preparing it for its next tour of duty.  The truck, known as the “Blue Goose 2” is a 1968 Mack CF 600 fire engine.  Until recently, it appeared that the truck was headed for the scrap yard, a somewhat ignominious end to a 43-year career in the fire service.  (more…)

Firefighters go through specialized training tailored just for the downtown area.  "The peninsula is a very unique area, full of historic buildings dating back to the 1700s for some of them. Bond Set for Accused Arsonist

CHARLESTON – Bond was set at $100,000 for a man accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend then setting fire to her home in West Ashley Saturday afternoon. Authorities charged Vantrez Grant with third-degree arson and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. Deputies responded to an apartment on Hillside Drive Saturday afternoon in reference to a fire. An affidavit states that Grant and the victim were having an argument when Grant hit the victim in the face with a closed fist multiple times.  (more…)

MT. PLEASANT –  The text to her husband was straightforward, much like Renee Thomas herself.  “It’s all fallen out. It’s all gone,” she wrote.  Mount Pleasant fire Lt. Troy Thomas didn’t hesitate. His wife had lost the last of her hair to chemotherapy for cervical cancer. Thomas turned to the other firefighters on the crew and asked if anybody had shears. If Renee could brave her way through this, he could at least lose his hair, too. (more…)

**BREAKING NEWS** FFs Battle Restaurant Blaze

NORTH CHARLESTON – Dispatchers say fire crews are on the scene of a blaze at the Noisy Oyster on Rivers Avenue.  Officials with Consolidated Dispatch say the fire happened at the restaurant in the 7,800-block of Rivers Avenue.

It is being reported that North Charleston Fire Department is responding with 5 engines, 2 Ladders, 1 Rescue, 2 Battalion Chiefs and 1 Division Chief. EMS also on scene.

Apartment Building Burns Quickly; Sprinklers Unable to Help

ANDERSON COUNTY – Some parts of a 24-unit apartment building in Anderson still smoldered Thursday as investigators grappled with how it could have gone up in flames so quickly. Building 100, one of 10 buildings in the Walden Oaks apartment complex near Clemson Boulevard and Salem Church Road just outside Anderson city limits, burned Wednesday afternoon, displacing dozens of people.  (more…)

Fire Destroys Lake House

SALEM – A blaze destroyed a home in the Cliffs at Keowee Falls development Thursday despite the efforts of fire departments from Oconee and Pickens counties.  The two-story home 203 Driftwood Court at Jasmine Point in Salem was already heavily involved in fire when firefighters answered the call shortly after 10:06 a.m., according to Charlie King, Oconee County emergency services and fire chief.  (more…)

Fire Rescue Chief Steps Down

CONWAY – Horry County Fire/Rescue Chief Garry Alderman has asked to be reassigned within the department due to personal reasons. That request has been accepted and Alderman will become the new Director of Support Services, beginning on Monday, April 16. Deputy Fire Chief Kenneth Beans will assume the Interim Fire Chief position until a permanent Fire Chief is selected.  (more…)
