“Peanut Man” Loses Equipment in Fire

CHARLESTON – Tony the Peanut Man had just taken a break from boiling his trademark legumes when a loud knock sounded on the front door of his West Ashley home early Tuesday. “There’s a fire in your backyard,” a breathless neighbor told him.  Tony, also known as Anthony Wright, ran barefoot from his 5th Avenue home, ignoring the sting of gravel on his feet as he rounded the corner.   (more..)

Unique Challenges for Charleston FF’s

CHARLESTON – Old construction, closely built buildings, and crowded streets, all among the challenges when fighting fires on the peninsula. Firefighters go through specialized training tailored just for the downtown area.  "The peninsula is a very unique area, full of historic buildings dating back to the 1700s for some of them. Each of those has unique challenges in construction, how close they are together and how much they mean to the tourists coming to visit," Deputy Chief John Tippett said.  (more…)

Bond Set for Accused Arsonist

CHARLESTON – Bond was set at $100,000 for a man accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend then setting fire to her home in West Ashley Saturday afternoon. Authorities charged Vantrez Grant with third-degree arson and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. Deputies responded to an apartment on Hillside Drive Saturday afternoon in reference to a fire. An affidavit states that Grant and the victim were having an argument when Grant hit the victim in the face with a closed fist multiple times.  (more…)

**BREAKING NEWS** FFs Battle Restaurant Blaze

NORTH CHARLESTON – Dispatchers say fire crews are on the scene of a blaze at the Noisy Oyster on Rivers Avenue.  Officials with Consolidated Dispatch say the fire happened at the restaurant in the 7,800-block of Rivers Avenue.

It is being reported that North Charleston Fire Department is responding with 5 engines, 2 Ladders, 1 Rescue, 2 Battalion Chiefs and 1 Division Chief. EMS also on scene.

Fire Destroys Nightclub

ROCK HILL – Firefighters spent several hours Monday morning battling a blaze at a Rock Hill nightclub, officials say. More than 20 firefighters responded to Club Odyssey at 593 Wilson Street after multiple people called to report the fire about 2:30 a.m., said Battalion Chief Steve Rogers. Rock Hill House Fire Injures 3

ROCK HILL – An overnight fire injured three people and destroyed a house on Camden Avenue in Rock Hill. Firefighters and EMS were called to the home around 3:30 a.m., said Battalian Chief Ben Funderburk. The fire was fully engulfed when crews arrived and took more than 20 officials about three hours to clear the scene. (more…)

Fire Damages Ft. Jackson NCO Club

Fort Jackson, SC (WLTX) – Columbia firefighters responded to a blaze at the Fort Jackson Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) club. Firefighters say the blaze began around 8:30 inside a storage room at the facility. Fort Jackson firefighters reponded first, and Columbia Fire later joined in the suppression effort. The fire caused heavy smoke to fill the building. No one was inside at the time. It's not clear yet what led up to the fire. The club is used daily for dining on the base, and is rented out for weddings and other parties.

Bucket of Rags Start Spartanburg Fire

SPARTANBURG COUNTY - The North Spartanburg Fire Department responded to a house fire at 5235 North Blackstock Road on Tuesday afternoon. Two other fire departments helped North Spartanburg battle the blaze. Officials tell 7 On Your Side that the home was destroyed, but thankfully no one was inside or hurt. According to Capt. Larry Brady with the North Spartanburg Fire Department the home owner was refinishing the floors and left a bucket of rags unattended. Brady says the refinishing product was flammable and caught on fire.

Train Carrying Methanol Derails in Abbeville

ABBEVILLE COUNTY - Crews are on the scene working around the clock to clean up a chemical spill following a Thursday morning train derailment in Abbeville. Nearby homes were evacuated after more than two dozen CSX train cars derailed around 5 a.m. at Redd and Hagler Streets, near Long Branch Street. Active Duty Marine Charged With Murder in Stolen Fire Truck Fatality

BEAUFORT – A 26-year-old active-duty Marine from Sumter, who authorities say stole a Port Royal firetruck, struck six vehicles and killed a pedestrian, has been charged with murder. Kalvin Hunt is accused of striking and killing 28-year-old Justin Miller of Port Royal while he walked with his brother along Ribaut Road on Friday. Fire Chief Thomas Carr Hospitalized Two Days Before Retirement

CHARLESTON – Fire Thomas Carr was hospitalized over the weekend due to complications from Parkinson's disease just two days short of his scheduled retirement. Nude Man Steals Port Royal Fire Truck, Kills Pedestrian

BEAUFORT – A pedestrian walking along Ribaut Road was struck and killed Friday afternoon by a man who stole a Port Royal firetruck as firefighters answered a medical call. Colleton County Home Destroyed by Fire

COTTAGEVILLE – Colleton County Fire Rescue crews battled a blaze at 125 Dodge Lane,just south of Cottageville. The large double wide mobile home was located in a remote area and down a long dirt road. The people were not at home when the fire started. When they returned home they found the home heavily involved.

Man Arrested After Fire Destroys Spartanburg County Home

SPARTANBURG – Firefighters from Hilltop, Una, Drayton, and Whitney Fire Departments responded to 998 North Church St. shortly before 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a fire at a home that formerly housed a business known as the Browse Barn. Flames Destroy Spartanburg County Home, Two Pets Die

SPARTANBURG - Flames have destroyed a mobile home in Spartanburg County. It happened Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. on Jordan Creek Road in Inman. North Spartanburg and Tyger River fire departments were called to the fire. Firefighters say there is heavy smoke and water damage to the single family home. There were people home at the time the fire started but they were able to make it out safely. However two animals were killed in the fire.

SLED Called To Investigate Kelly-Kelton Fire Substation

UNION – County Sheriff David Taylor has requested the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate a 2011 burglary at the Kelly-Kelton Fire Department substation. Authorities have received some information that firemen may be involved.

911 Calls Describe Fires Frantic Moments Before Help Arrived

NORTH CHARLESTON – Multiple frantic, desperate onlookers called 911 Friday morning to report a blaze consuming a North Charleston apartment. A mother and two children were trapped in a smoke-filled second-floor at Noisette Creek Apartments until the mom tossed a child out a window to a man waiting on the ground. North Charleston Firefighter Injured in 2010 Blaze Criticizes Department

NORTH CHARLESTON – John Bolton says he's anything but disgruntled. The North Charleston firefighter, who was injured in a 2010 blaze, claims the city is using him as a scapegoat to divert from what he calls the failures of the department during the fire that injured three. On July 7, 2010 Bolton says he barely made it out alive. He says he was upstairs the Hollow Oaks neighborhood home with two other firefighters when he walked into a fireball. (more…)

Fire Destroys 1 Home, Damages 2 Others

NORTH CHARLESTON – The North Charleston Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 3100 block of Accabee Road just after 7:15 a.m. Sunday. First arriving units reported a fully involved single family home at the location. The home where the fire originated was unoccupied at the time and was destroyed by the blaze. The fire affected two adjacent homes with minor damage to one home and significant damage to the other.

No one was injured in the fire and the cause of the original fire remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross is assisting one family.

COLUMBIA – 23-year-old career Firefighter Chance Zobel was struck and killed by a car while at the scene of a grass fire on November 13th, 2010.
