Remembering the Charleston 9

CHARLESTON – It is a somber day as we remember the sacrifice of the 9 Charleston Firefighters who laid down their lives 4 years ago today at the infamous Sofa Super Store Fire. They are Captain Louis Mulkey, Captain Mike Benke, FF Melvin Champaign, Captain Billy Hutchingson, Engineer Brad Baity, FF Earl Drayton, Engineer Mark Kelsey, Engineer Michael French, and FF Brandon Thompson. Always Remember, Never Forget.

BOSTON, MA – We must also remember the sacrifice made by others. Yesterday, June 17th, was the 39th Anniversary of the Hotel Vendome Fire that killed 9 of Bostons Bravest in 1972. They were FF Thomas W. Beckwith, FF Joseph E. Boucher, Lt. Thomas J. Carroll, FF Charles E. Dolan, Lt. John E. Hanbury, Jr., FF John E. Jameson, FF Richard B. Magee, FF Paul J. Murphy, and FF Joseph P. Saniuk. Another 8 men were critically injured in the collapse.

FDNY – We also must remember the 2001 Fathers Day Fire in the Queens Burough of New York. Three Firefighters were killed after and explosion trapped them in a collapse. They were FF Brian Fahey, FF Harry Ford, and FF John Downing.

MEMPHIS, TN – Thanks go to Larry Boothby for the reminder of the Father's Day Fire June 15th, 2003. Lt. Trent Clark and Private Charles Zachary lost theirs lives while battling a raging fire in a Family Dollar Store. (apologies to the MFD for not posting this information)

We also need to remember all of the Firefighters that have lost their lives in the service to their communities. In the past few weeks we have lost multiple Firefighters. They were FF Scott Davis of Muncie, IN  who was killed on June 15th in collapse during a church fire, FF Corey Shaw of Du Quoin, IL who was killed on June 17th in a collapse of a heavily involved commercial building, and FF David Goins of Angelina County, TX died from burns received in a wildland fire.

God Bless the families and friends of the Charleston 9, as well as others mentioned in this article.
