CHARLESTON – It's a scene that no one wants to see, but first responders must prepare for a mass casualty incident in the event that it occurs. On Tuesday morning, Dorchester, Berkeley and Charleston counties all participated in the mock emergency drill at the Amenity Center in Westcott Plantation. "We are testing not only our ability to establish an organized command structure at the scene, across multiple jurisdictions and multiple agencies, but as well, the hospital's ability to handle this type of sudden surge," Doug Warren, Dorchester County EMS director said. CHESTER – Flags around the county flew at half staff on Monday to honor Blackstock Fire Department Chief Brian Keith Hudson. Hudson unexpectedly passed away at his home Thursday after attending a fireman’s meeting. (more…)
CHESTER – Landmark gas station goes up in flames overnight, but residents are vowing to help the owner rebuild. When the orange glow lit up the early morning sky in Chester, a lot of people said their memories went up in flames along with the Country Corner gas station which was destroyed. The store, which is located on Center Road just outside of downtown, had stood in the same location for the better part of a century. Now, it lays in ruins. (more…)
SUMTER – A 26-year-old Sumter man charged with murder after allegedly stealing a Port Royal fire truck, then striking and killing a pedestrian in February was indicted by a county grand jury last week. Indictments filed April 19 against Kalvin Hunt were among more than 200 handed down by the Beaufort County grand jury during its monthly session at the County Courthouse, according to the 14th Circuit Solicitor's Office. SUMMERVILLE – We have new information on a toddler who drowned in Summerville. Charleston County says miscommunication led to a delay in crews getting to an emergency scene. A neighbor from the Summer Park subdivision called 911 last Friday when 2-year-old Sia Jarvis was found in a retention pond. Dorchester County EMS was already on the way to the hospital with the girl before Charleston County, the agency in charge of responding, even arrived. (more…)

BEAUFORT – Two Beaufort High School students were killed in a single-car accident Saturday night. Officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol say a 2009 Mitsubishi Sedan was traveling on Seaside Road when the 18-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle and the car went off the road, overturned and struck a tree. Both the driver and the teen riding in the passenger's seat died at the scene of the accident officials say happened at about 7:44 p.m. (more…)
BEAUFORT – A 26-year-old active-duty Marine from Sumter, who authorities say stole a Port Royal firetruck, struck six vehicles and killed a pedestrian, has been charged with murder. Kalvin Hunt is accused of striking and killing 28-year-old Justin Miller of Port Royal while he walked with his brother along Ribaut Road on Friday. (more…)

BEAUFORT – A pedestrian walking along Ribaut Road was struck and killed Friday afternoon by a man who stole a Port Royal firetruck as firefighters answered a medical call. UNION – County Sheriff David Taylor has requested the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate a 2011 burglary at the Kelly-Kelton Fire Department substation. Authorities have received some information that firemen may be involved.

NORTH CHARLESTON – Multiple frantic, desperate onlookers called 911 Friday morning to report a blaze consuming a North Charleston apartment. A mother and two children were trapped in a smoke-filled second-floor at Noisette Creek Apartments until the mom tossed a child out a window to a man waiting on the ground. Then the mom jumped. NORTH CHARLESTON – John Bolton says he's anything but disgruntled. The North Charleston firefighter, who was injured in a 2010 blaze, claims the city is using him as a scapegoat to divert from what he calls the failures of the department during the fire that injured three. On July 7, 2010 Bolton says he barely made it out alive. He says he was upstairs the Hollow Oaks neighborhood home with two other firefighters when he walked into a fireball. (more…)

COLUMBIA – 23-year-old career Firefighter Chance Zobel was struck and killed by a car while at the scene of a grass fire on November 13th, 2010. The driver that struck and killed him was an illegal immigrant. The NIOSH Report has been released and is available for review. NEW YORK, NY – The Black Sunday Fire – January 23rd, 2005 – The Bronx blaze claimed the lives of FDNY Lt. Curtis W. Meyran, L27 – FF John G. Bellew, L27; critically injured FF Jeffrey Cool, R3 and Lt. Joseph DiBernardo, R3 and injured FF Brendan Cawley, L27 and FF Eugene Stolowski, L27. All 6 FF's were forced to jump from the 4th floor of an apartment building as they were trapped by the fire.
Another FDNY Brother died just 3 hours later in another fire, this time in Brooklyn, after being trapped in a basement during a residential fire. He was FF Richard T. Sclafani of L103.

COLUMBIA – President Ken Kerber is pleased to announce that Rev. Dr. Gary Rogers has accepted the position of the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association Chaplin. A search committee had been formed to assist with this important selection and made their recommendation last week.
WEST FLORENCE – West Florence Fire Department is sad to announce the passing of former Chief Phillip Kennedy. Chief Kennedy became a member of West Florence Fire Department close to when the department was started in 1973. In 1975 he became chief of the department until he retired in 2005. He will be greatly missed by all!
BENNETTSVILLE – The Bennettsville Police Department has made an arrest in connection to a burglary and arson at a local church in 2009. Lt. Larry Turner with the Bennettsville Police Department said officers have arrested Jarrod Demario Hicks, 19, of Bennettsville and more arrests are possible.
Augusta, GA - Putting the heat on who will be Augusta's new fire chief…the city has narrowed the list of candidates to run the fire service to three, including Acting Chief Chris James. Now, Augusta Commissioners will get the chance to take a measure of the finalists.
PENDLETON – 63-year-old David Crenshaw, a veteran Firefighter and former Anderson County Sheriff, died this morning at a traffic accident. The 50+ year veteran responded to the scene of an accident at Highway 88 & Porter Road and was assisting EMS when he collapsed at the pump panel of a fire engine. Crenshaw was taken to AnMed Health where he was pronounced dead at 7:55 am.
Anderson County Fire Chief Billy Gibson says Crenshaw was a founding member and served with the Pendleton Volunteer Fire Dept since 1962. He had been the Pendleton Fire Chief for 21 + years.

DENMARK – The Bamberg County Coroner, Billy Duncan has identified the 4-year-old girl killed in this morning's house fire as Janae Greggs. The fire started around 1 a.m. at a mobile home on Cotton Street. That's off Church Street, near Whaley Street. When crews arrived on the scene, the structure was fully engulfed.
