Firefighters, Civic Leaders Propose 9/11 Memorial to Oconee School Board
WALHALLA – A group of Oconee County firefighters and civic leaders want to make sure the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America are not forgotten. The group asked the School District of Oconee County Board of Trustees at a meeting this week for permission and space to erect a 9/11 memorial on the property of the new Walhalla High School that is to be constructed on S.C. 11 North. UPDATE: 3 NOW CONFIRMED FATAL; ONE MISSING
YORK COUNTY – A massive line of severe weather created several tornado's that touched down in South and North Carolina. At least three people have been killed and up to five or more are still missing.
One tornado touched down in Chester County (photo above) causing significant damage to cars, trees, and mobile homes.
Another storm cell moved through York County in the area of Rock Hill killing at least three people. The area of devestation is near Williamson Road and Highway 324.
One mobile home was thrown 100+ yards as well as several cars tossed onto their roofs.
2 Weeks, 3 Fires, 3 Killed
HORRY COUNTY – 3 house fires that killed 3 Horry County people in less than 2 weeks have been ruled accidental. The most recent death occurred early Thursday when Brenda Casey, 49, died in her home located at 3017 Shetland Lane, which is located off U.S. 17 Bypass near the Myrtle Beach International Airport, Horry County Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said. HORRY COUNTY – Three separate house fires, including two where people were killed, in Horry County Sunday night and early Monday kept fire and rescue crews busy, according to authorities. Origin of Church Fire Remains a Mystery

Grandson Attempts Save of Grandmother in Deadly Blaze
SUMTER – Two people were killed early Saturday morning after officials with the Sumter Fire Department say their home caught fire.
Authorities say a 25-year-old male and his 80-year-old grandmother died at the home on Boulevard Road while trying to escape the blaze which was described as "fully involved" by the time firefighters arrived at the scene around 2:00am.

COLUMBIA – The Columbia Fire Department is hiring, but the road to getting the job isn't easy. "Tough Course," said Assistant Chief Jamie Helms of the training system for recruits. Many start, but only a select few can finish. New Photo of Church Fire Released by Georgetown Fire Department
GEORGETOWN – The Georgetown City Fire Department has released this new photograph of the fire that destroyed Greater St. Stephen AME Church on Winyah Street Sunday morning.
Assistant Fire Chief Bill Johnson said the picture was taken about ten minutes after the first firefighters arrived on the scene.
12 Transported After Van Wreck on Interstate 95

HAMPTON COUNTY – At least 12 people are reportedly being transported to local hospitals following a one-vehicle wreck which involved a 15-passenger van Monday afternoon on Interstate 95. The accident was reported around 3:05p.m. as the van reportedly rolled over in the area of the 37 mile marker southbound with numerous passengers inside. Initial reports revealed there were at least 11 adults and three children involved in the accident.
SLED Called in to Investigate Church Fire
GEORGETOWN – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called in to assist with the investigation of Sunday's fire that leveled St. Stephen AME Church. But, that does not mean arson is suspected as the cause of the blaze, according to Georgetown Police Capt. Nelson Brown.
Fire Destroys St. Stephen AME Church
GEORGETOWN – The congregation of St. Stephen AME Church was expecting to attend a service today honoring their stewards and trustees today. Instead, they were awakened by the news that their historic church was fully engulfed in flames.
The fire at the historic church — pastored by State Rep. Carl Anderson — was reported at around 7 a.m. after nearby residents reported hearing a loud explosion. Darrin Lawyer, a member of the church who lives across Winyah Street, said he called 911.
West Florence FF’s Contain House Fire
FLORENCE – A Florence home has sustained heavy heat and smoke damage Wednesday afternoon following a fire.
Capt. Anthony Fox, spokesman for the West Florence Fire Department, said firefighters responded to a home along McNiel Drive around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday for a reported house fire.
Units including two engines, a tanker truck and a rescue truck located smoke coming from the roof of the home, but were able to contain the fire to the room of origin, said Fox.
Florence County EMS and the Florence County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and the cause remains under investigation at this time. No one was hurt.
SC Highway Patrol Probing Crash That Killed EMS Patient
ORANGEBURG – Highway Patrol reconstruction team is working to determine the cause of an ambulance crash which left a 79-year-old patient dead. Mary Thompson of Vance died Monday as a result of blunt force trauma sustained when the ambulance overturned, Orangeburg County Coroner Samuetta Marshall said.
DUI Charge Reduced For North Charleston Fire Captain
MIAMI BEACH - North Charleston Fire Captain Carlos LaFeith King is slated to return to full duty today after Florida prosecutors determined there wasn't evidence to support DUI charges against him. King was off duty when he crashed into a parked police car near a volatile shooting scene in that city on Memorial Day. Police shot at King during the incident and then hauled him away on a charge of DUI. (more…)

Elgin Fire Chief Dennis Cauthen Passes
ELGIN – We regret to inform the Fire Service of South Carolina that Fire Chief Dennis Cauthen of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department died this morning after returning from a house fire in Lancaster.
Chief Cauthen who had served as a Volunteer Firefighter for more than 30 years, died this morning after a structure fire. He was 54 years-of-age.
While enroute to the fire early this morning Chief Cauthen began complaining of stomach pains. He remained at the fire for three hours. After the fire at around 6am, Chief Cauthen reportedly passed out and died.

Crane Overturns Injuring Construction Worker
SPARTANBURG - Poole and another witness said the man, who was not identified, plunged about 15 feet from the seat of the crane into an 8-foot-deep hole. Construction workers were at Cornerstone Baptist Church Tuesday to install a vault that will supply water to the church sprinkler system. The church is undergoing an expansion. (more…)
White Knoll Students’ Generosity Still Shines 10 Years Later
LEXINGTON COUNTY - A small but significant chunk of American history sits in a display case in the front lobby of White Knoll Middle School in rural Lexington County: A battered section of sheet metal bearing the words “Red Hook Raiders.” The piece is from the door of a Fire Department of New York ladder truck that was crushed at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001. All seven firefighters that manned her — from a station in the blue-collar Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn — were killed when Tower One collapsed after the terrorist attacks.
