Community Remembers Cleveland School Fire of 1923

CAMDEN —  Law enforcement and families remembered the 77 lives lost in the Cleveland School Fire of 1923. "It's a significant historical event, one that should never be forgotten," said William Major.  Firefighters and family members came to where a midlands school went up in flames back in 1923, killing 77 people at a school play.  (more…)

Restaurant Destroyed by Blaze Re-Opens for Business

MURRELLS INLET – A south Strand restaurant that burned to the ground re-opened Wednesday. The owners of the Dead Dog Saloon rebuilt and welcomed back its loyal customers for a private party. The fire destroyed the building the night after the Mardi Gras celebration on the Marshwalk.  (more…)

Blaze Destroys Large Home and Injures Two FFs

KIAWAH ISLAND – Fire destroyed a large, multimillion-dollar house and injured two firefighters on Kiawah Island early this morning, and investigators are looking to see if lightning caused the inferno.  The blaze was reported just after 4:03 a.m. at 405 Ocean Oaks Court, a home on the eastern end of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, according to Capt. FFs Save Home and Pet

LUGOFF – An unattended stove caused a Wednesday house fire in Lugoff that injured no one, but required the rescue of a pet Guinea pig.  Lugoff Fire Department firefighters were called to the house on East Ridge Road around 3 p.m. and saw heavy black smoke billowing from the front door and windows, the department reported.  (more…)

Two Volunteer Depts Merge

AIKEN COUNTY – The Midland Valley Fire Protection Service area, a result of the merger of the Bath and Clearwater volunteer fire departments, has been created and approved.  Aiken County Council authorized the creation of the new service area Tuesday and executed a contract with the newly-formed Midland Valley Volunteer Fire Department for fire protection service within its boundaries.  (more…)

Emergency Crews Test Response Plan

CHARLESTON – It's a scene that no one wants to see, but first responders must prepare for a mass casualty incident in the event that it occurs. On Tuesday morning, Dorchester, Berkeley and Charleston counties all participated in the mock emergency drill at the Amenity Center in Westcott Plantation.  "We are testing not only our ability to establish an organized command structure at the scene, across multiple jurisdictions and multiple agencies, but as well, the hospital's ability to handle this type of sudden surge," Doug Warren, Dorchester County EMS director said.  (more…)

Flags Fly At Half Mast in Honor of Fire Chief

FFs Respond to Daycare Blaze

MYRTLE BEACH – Myrtle Beach fire investigators are searching for the cause of an early morning blaze at Pat-A-Cake Day Care and Learning Center, according to authorities.  Fire crews were called at 6:36 a.m. Monday to 902 Yaupon Drive in the city for the blaze, said Lt. Christian Sliker, with the Myrtle Beach Fire Department. Firefighters found heavy flames and smoke coming from two rooms in the building when they arrived at the scene.  (more…)

Bluffton to Add New Fire Station

BLUFFTON – The Bluffton Township Fire District has signed a $2.2 million contract for a new fire station near Old Town. The 7,200-square-foot station is planned for the intersection of Ulmer and Burnt Church roads. It would replace Station 30, a 34-year-old firehouse a few hundred feet away at 2 Bridge St. that has documented structural problems. With the contract in hand, Court Atkins Architects and Fraser Construction can firm up the plans and apply for building permits, said Deputy Fire Chief John Thompson.  (more…)

Charleston FD Has First Female Fire Chief

CHARLESTON – Friday marked history in Charleston as Mayor Joseph P. Riley announced his selection of fire chief for the City of Charleston Fire Department.  The new chief selected to fill the boots left by Thomas Carr is a first for the Holy City. The new chief is a woman.  Karen Brack is a 30-year fire veteran that the mayor said impressed him the most during the interview process.  (more…)

One Arrested in Forest Fire

HORRY COUNTY – One man has been cited with allowing a debris fire to get out of control and spread, causing the 200-acre burn in Carolina Forest.  The fire is, at this time, contained, said South Carolina Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins, thanks to the rain and the crews that have worked around the clock, but crews are not finished yet.  Because the soil in this area contains a lot of “peaty, organic material” under its surface, fire crews must continue to attack hot spots and make sure the soil is not still smoldering.  (more…)

FFs: Don’t Hide Hydrants

BLUFFTON – A fire hydrant might not be the most attractive feature on a front lawn, but concealing it with landscaping could hinder firefighters' response in an emergency, according to the Bluffton Township Fire District.  "We only carry a limited amount of water on our trucks," district public-education officer Sandy Stroud said. "If we have to start cutting down bushes and trees to get to a hydrant, that water would go very quick — in about eight minutes."  (more…)

Dog Saves Owners from Fire

Charleston Plans for Largest Fire Station

FF Hurt While Battling Blaze

RICHLAND COUNTY – A fire destroyed a home in a northwest Richland County early Friday morning and also sent a firefighter to the hospital.  Brick Lewis with the Columbia-Richland Fire Department says they were called shortly before 2:00 a.m. to a mobile home on Kennerly Rd. Once on the scene they found the home fully engulfed in flames, according to Lewis. No one was inside the home when firefighters arrived.  (more…)

Mail Truck Destroyed by Fire

TAYLORS – A fire was responsible for the destruction of the US Postal Service truck Saturday afternoon in Taylors.  The fire started around 3:30 p.m. on Caroline Drive.  A post office spokesman said the mail carrier's truck stopped all of a sudden.  When she got out to look under the hood, she noticed fluid leaking.  (more….)

Landmark Gas Station Burns

CHESTER –  Landmark gas station goes up in flames overnight, but residents are vowing to help the owner rebuild.  When the orange glow lit up the early morning sky in Chester, a lot of people said their memories went up in flames along with the Country Corner gas station which was destroyed.  The store, which is located on Center Road just outside of downtown, had stood in the same location for the better part of a century.  Now, it lays in ruins.  (more…)

Fire Destroys Local Business

LAURENS COUNTY – Fire destroyed a Laurens County business Thursday.  The fire started around 5 p.m. at Apple Creek Woodworks on Metric Road in Gray Court. Laurens County Fire Coordinator Greg Lindley said that firefighters responded to the business and found the building engulfed. Suspect in Fatal Firetruck Theft Charged

SUMTER – A 26-year-old Sumter man charged with murder after allegedly stealing a Port Royal fire truck, then striking and killing a pedestrian in February was indicted by a county grand jury last week.  Indictments filed April 19 against Kalvin Hunt were among more than 200 handed down by the Beaufort County grand jury during its monthly session at the County Courthouse, according to the 14th Circuit Solicitor's Office.  (more…)

Townhouses Destroyed in Fire

BLUFFTON – A fire that broke out at townhouses at about 3 p.m Tuesday in Oldfield Mews in Bluffton severely damaged one of them.  Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 40 minutes, according to the Bluffton Township Fire District. Of the six adjoining townhouses, the middle unit was heavily damaged, Capt. Island Fire Destroys Home

DEWEES ISLAND – Fire leveled two homes and damaged at least two more on this tiny island community Tuesday night.  The fire was first reported about 9 p.m. and was extinguished within a couple of hours with the help of fire crews that arrived by boat. There is no bridge to the island.  (more…)
