From the moment we first discovered fire’s elusive secret and began to use it to provide the heat and comfort that we now take for granted, it has been a constant threat and ever-present danger. As vital to our survival as fire is, it has a life of its own and throughout history, it has been the cause of untold human suffering. Fire gives, and fire can just as easily take away.
Hi, I’m Scott Connors and I’ve been a firefighter for the last twenty years. After seeing the house across the street from where I lived as a boy burn down, my job became my calling. I saw the damage that fire can do firsthand, and I wanted to do everything that I could to make sure that fire couldn’t, and wouldn’t hurt anyone else. It was why I became a firefighter and I haven’t regretted the decision I started thinking about as a seven-year-old, or even given it a second thought, since I made it happen two decades ago.
It was also the reason that I started SConFire, as I wanted to tell as many people as possible about the life of a firefighter, what it takes to join the fire department, and everything that you need to know about fire and how to fight it. It’s an ongoing process, and the site is growing all the time, but hopefully, you’ll find what you’re looking for here, and maybe after spending a couple of hours reading through the contents, you’ll find your calling and want to follow the same career course that I did. We could always use more good, committed individuals in every fire department in America, and if you think you have what it takes to stand up and do the job, I’d be proud to fight any fire with you if you answer the call of duty.
